I read this link right to the bottom and thought it is was inspiring. I know that some of us are quite enjoying the make-do and mend challenge and the cameraderie it has engendered on this thread

I think this forum is a barricade and shelter against the negative vibes outside. Come back guineapig when you've had a good read ! :)

    Hi Guineapig,

Glad you appreciated the book - it was my dad's fave book and he 'made' me read it when I was about 14. It opened my eyes to a lot of the things he talked about. Sadly now he has alzheimers and we can't get a good discussion going and 'put the world to rights' around the kitchen table any more - and I really miss that, but thinking about that book reminds me of better times.

I'm sorry that you are thinking of leaving MSE - I know what you mean about the tone on the boards at the moment - which is why I have retreated almost entirely to the OS board...a much friendlier bunch of people here than elsewhere on MSE at the moment.

    Best wishes,

    FE

PS - I recommended before (earlier in this thread maybe?) Round About A Pound A Week by Maud Pember Reeves....if you liked TRTP then you'd prob. like that one too...

    Glad you enjoyed the book.

Sorry to hear that you are thinking of "leaving" so to say - and I would echo the comment above that maybe you might like to just stick to the O.S. Board on M.S.E. - where things are friendlier.

I see where you are coming from in your remark about not being able to be a "sensitive" without being sensitive.....I guess the two do tend to go together. But I hope you feel able to still participate on this Board anyways. I would think there are two sides to being a "sensitive" - the downside of feeling stuff that might well pass straight over a lot of other peoples heads - but the plus side could be maybe/possibly an enhanced "ability" to sense "which way the wind is blowing" - which I would say is personally beneficial and brings an element of responsibility with it....but then I could just be "talking through my hat" - so feel free to ignore me if you want. But 'twould be nice if you "stayed on board".

ed to add - I saw a production of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists _ I took my 23 yr old daughter and we both loved it. I studied the book many years ago and it is such a moving account of hardship and an unfair world.

That's a very interesting link kittie, quite a bit to go at in there, although I couldn't learn much from the money saving tips. I think I (in company with most on this thread) already know most of them.

I for one don't feel too daunted by the meaner leaner times which are starting to dawn upon us. Being a 'war baby' it was how I was brought up and I had a totally secure childhood. I felt more insecure when I had extra cash in my purse because however much money you have there is alway something you can't afford, there is just no end to it.

To me, returning to a more frugal lifestyle is just like going home, and I feel completely at ease with it.

thanks Kittie that was a really interesting read :D
Ceridwen and Fairyelephant,I've noted those book titles and will add to my evergrowing list! Becca your blanky is FAB :T I soo wish I could crochet properly well done!!!!!! Love the colours too :D
Guineapig I've noticed some of the other boards becoming a bit more erm...unfriendly as of late and we've even had our annual hiccup on O/S but on the whole there are so many nice people on MSE the ones who 'make trouble' usually get bored quickly and move on again..I'll be sad to see you go I hope you'll continue to read even if you don't post :D

Everyone should read the article that Kittie pointed out. I remember ration books and making do and mend the first time round. Although I think I can cope with austerity I worry about my family with their mortgages and credit cards so the credit crunch is affecting me too. (emotionally)
