lol!!!! :rotfl: yes, but you haven't seen my pantry other wise you would not be jealous!

its a old 1940's house and the pantry is dead scruffy. It needs a huge clean and i keep everything but the kitchen sink in there, plates, pans, gadgets etc... really it could do with a huge declutter??:p then i could start to stock up properly!!!!

I would rather be overcaution and end up having to pass on perishables to my mother or have a bake-fest to use them all up than get caught short/go without if things do go tits up.

I totally agree with you :D

    Hi
have been popping in from time to time and notice with interest how you are storing dry goods. Would that I had the space...however is there anywhere that gives a sesible use by date on tinned goods or should I just go by the manufacturers date?

How long can I keep homemade jam - at the moment my oldest is 2 years. I make three types...does the fruit type make a difference?

I don`t have much storage at all, being in a new town house but the space under the stairs is my saving grace. I invested in dozens of lock & lock boxes over the years and by some stroke of luck I got sizes that stack very neatly, 3 high, on 4" deep shelves in the glory hole. Then this year I bought several 8 litre boxes with carry handles, that disappear (fab fab boxes, very tactile and useful)

Valli you wouldn`t believe the amount I have in there, including 40kg of shiptons flour that I bought in bulk

re hm jam. 2 years is ok, I have kept jam longer than that. I found 1 tsp of whisky, brandy or similar on top helped keep mould at bay. Watery fruit does not keep as well ie rain soaked raspberries etc

:D Mardatha I hear 'The Civilwar cookbook' is quite a good read too ;)
I need to find a link for you its for loads of really old american cookery books and they've scanned them all in for you to read in their entirety..many are from the early 20th century..very interesting!!
I'll see if I can find it in a mo,not sure if its on this comp or upstairs one.

Dorry I am another one coveting your storage space :rotfl:

Kittie same here!! I love lock'n'lock and I use under the stairs :T mmm those 8 litre ones sound good may I ask where you got those from pretty please :D

Hi Margaret ooh would love a quickie review on that book I keep looking at it on amazon..they have some weird old suggestions for me that site based on my past purchases...more than a little scary :rotfl: I think I'll be on a 'most wanted' poster sometime soon!!

TY triple D...its very interesting yes. But the amount of "christian"s in it is scarey !!
  • I stockpiled some dry dog food when it was on special offer. Got some out earlier in the week and both dogs refused to eat it . I thought perhaps because this brand had larger chunks than they'd been used to. They tried to eat some and it was left spat out on the floor. Not like my dogs at all.

Later that day they were both ill :(

DH sniffed the bag of food and told me it was rancid. I have a terrible sense of smell !! It had gone just a few days over it's best before date but I usually assume this is just best before and not use by!

So that was a real waste. I'd hesitate to store too much food for us for the same reason, also we have a tiny house and not much storage space.
I do like to have a couple of weeks worth of bits in the freezer and cupboard though just in case I am confined to bed or in hospital etc etc
