Dorry when starting a store from scratch the best way to do it is by jotting down each meal you all have for two weeks (some do a month)
Decide what amount you woud like to have on hand (say 3 months supply)
Next add up what you have used in those two weeks i.e 10 chicken breasts,1 stew steak,3lb of carrots and so on...
then times that by 6 (3 months divided by 2 weeks is 6) and you have the amount you need to have on hand...
of course this is just a guide and depending how prepared you want to be and also how your family likes to eat all needs to be taken into consideration as does storage space!!!
I just like to live with a nice old store and can live with tins falling on my toe everytime I open the larder cupboard and comments from my neighbours saying "if there's a war we know where to come!"
Just last week a friend of ours ran into trouble and I helped her out with a chicken, bag of mince, eggs, flour, baked a loaf of bread and pulled some greens and salad from the garden...she has 3 littlies to think of and it felt so good to be able to help.
hi d & dd
Thank you for this. i have a massive walk in pantry and lots of storage in a big utility room out back, so i could store quite a bit i think!!:D
ok, off to work out things that we need !!! xxxxxxx:T'If you judge people, you have no time to love them'

I think one thing we SHOULDN'T do, is follow a few posters on some other threads & start laying in to each other. Someone posted on here a while back at how they felt others were taking this thread to the extreme, but we all excepted that this was their opinion & we just got on with quietly squirrelling away our nuts
Why does the story of Chicken Little suddenly spring to mind? :rolleyes:Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

Hi everyone, just reading all your posts here and really enjoying them. I have ordered a book called make do and mend from Play.com and I also received my wind up torch last week from them which my husband is pleased to have and hopefully we will all get through these very tough times ahead. We all have the advantage over the people who are in a lot of debt etc. as we are doing what we can to sort it out, and I am so thankful I found this site as it is wonderful to log onto. I would think there will be many people coming on to it, if they hear of it. I was in a charity shop last week and I thought there were more than usual in it, and I think that will change to being busier as well. Did anyone see the new show on I think bbc 2 last Wed I think called Twiggy's Frock show? It was very interesting and I think it has gone out at exactly the right time, and will help a lot of people . I am going to save for a second hand sewing machine and learn to make some clothes for myself, but I would really need to learn first. I am so glad I have my bm and my slow cooker as well, especially as it is getting cold here. We have had to turn on our heating but are careful with it. Lots of wonderful tips on here from lovely people.:ADo a little kindness every day.;)0

I would rather be overcaution and end up having to pass on perishables to my mother or have a bake-fest to use them all up than get caught short/go without if things do go tits up.0
