Well yesterday me and the kids were chatting about the credit crunch, and dd2 pointed out that at least we won't starve with all the supplies, poor girl had just had a bag of split peas leap out of the overcrowded cupboard and land on her head! But ds made a good point, what will happen to the people who can't cook?

About the powdered egg in mr t's, if you haven't found it already you prob won't, it was being discontinued hence the low price. It may come back in diff packaging though, like the gale's lemon curd did, I don't know. I've got an ancient preserving book I use a lot, and it talks about preserving eggs in their shells in a pail in ising glass (sp?), don't know what it is though, assume it's some kind of clear gel type stuff? I'm pretty certain I can remember a great aunt preserving eggs by painting them in parafin wax, no idea why she did this, it was the 1980s!

sammy, thanks for the gloves tip, dd1 is after some of these, apparently they're trendy! How cool are we all gonna look?!

kitty, thanks for the article, not good news is it? Got a text earlier from a girl I work with asking how to use lentils, she's bought them on my advice to stretch her bolognese and is now stuck!

Well I don't have a plan for repelling boarders in emergencies, but I think I might just gather the kids and our supplies and head for d&dd's house - she really does have a storecupboad to be proud of!

Does this strike anyone as odd? Our lesser off friends (ourselves included) appear to be managing a lot better through the crunch the our better off friends. We've always budgetted for the worse, however things have worked out better than anticipated (I think rent being low has helped). My middle class friends are honestly worrying about where they'll find money to pay the bills.

    Anyone else notice this?

Anyway to the original topic - I've cut out drinking for my health but it's also saving me a packet. I'm also trying to keep a closer eye on what I spend in an attempt to save some cash for a rainy day (or year).

    Nitha,

yes i have noticed this as well with friends, mostly those who have huge mortgages! They are really struggling atm! For years now, some of them have mocked me and oh for our frugal os way!!!

I remember my friend saying to us, why don't u move?? why don't u buy a new car?? She said 'ah well you just stay in your 'little house'

Well, yes now we are so glad we stayed in our 'little house', ( actually, its a 3 bedded semi in a nice area) We borrowed £25,000 for it and love it very much!!:D We could if need be, manage if the worst does come, don't think they could with a £300,000 mortgage, moreover we are not grey with worry and can sleep at nights!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D

I think I read somewhere that you can substitute a tablespoon (or teaspoon?) of soya flour for an egg in a recipe. If this is right and it works, then it would be good alternative to dried egg. Does anyone know? I'm planning an online supermarket shop of antisocial stockpiling joy (candles, tins, flour etc.)

Re the "well-off" friends struggling - I think a hefty portion of mine have not really been better off than us, but have been living on credit and are now having to deal with price rises and lack of new credit AND paying off the old credit. We've all had a few years (or months or even days!) of practising our OS skills, and so, while we won't have a great time we *will* have a smoother ride over the choppy future.
    On a mission.

We're trialling yellow split peas as a substitute since lentil are getting more expensive :rotfl:

  • Brila I think you're right that some people appear to be better off but it's all a show as their lifestyle is financed by huge debts. I think society encourages people to just get what they want without thinking about how they are going to pay for it and now the long-term consequences are being bought home to everyone. I like expensive holidays I admit but in order to pay for them (I always save first, I'd never borrow for a holiday) I'm thrifty in other ways. I always look for best deal and manage my money well and practice O/S household management. I may have spent £10 in M&S yesterday but that chicken will last for 3 meals and the wine is getting saved for Christmas! It's odd that it's taken the credit crunch to make people look at how they spend their money and take control of their budget and live within their means. I know it's resulted in a lot more hits on this site (I'm a long time lurker who's only recently joined). At least I'm in a postion where I can cut back on entravagances if I have too. I predict a huge number of conversions to the cult of O/S as people realise it's green and cheap. I think we need a TV show where an experinced O/S guru comes around to your house to give a O/S makeover, I'm sure it's be a hit! :D
