Our toilet stops flushing as soon as you take your finger off the button. When we bought it - about 5 years ago - I thought it a bit of a pain, but now I love it. I give it the merest touch most times and it just changes the water - or waters the contents clear - one or the other. It was a cheap loo as well.

Yeah exactly. The dutch are not so big on puddings unfortunately. It's more the dairy that gets eaten a lot here.

but it does make you wonder huh?

Thanks you all. Reading back I'm thinking "my kids seem to be right brats!"
    lol

But they're not really. They do realize money is in short supply and they are not as bad as many kids out there. But they do see that their friends have 'more stuff' than they do. And they do want it as well.

We do get a few hand-me-downs but not all that much. What we get given is always greatly appreciated. Kids have no problems accepting second hand clothes.

I guess it's more in the ways of: mobile phones, credit on those phones, having two pairs of shoes instead of 10.. having one winter coat, and a steady stream of goodies to eat whenever they fancy.

We are by no means afraid of saying NO to them. I say that quite a lot actually. :D It's just that they do see what's out there and they do want to fit in.

Come January things are going to get even tougher as two girls need braces for their teeth and we have to upgrade our health insurance to get them to cover most of those costs. That's another chunk out of our monthly income.

Pfff I'm just having a bit of a moan I guess.. after seeing DD3 (10) pour herself a glass of Ribena (well the dutch equiv.) with pure Ribena almost half way up the glass before she added a tiny bit of water...
The sugar blast is enough to knock the enamel clear off your teeth!..
I asked her why she did that.. didn't we just a few days ago discuss our financial state and asked the kids to be little bit more watchful of waste and stuff?...
She shrugged and said: "But this is just how I like it!."

After which she took two or three gulps, decided she'd had enough and tipped the rest of it down the sink!

That's what gets me!. We talk to them. Explain things, they seem to understand and agree. Yet when I"m out of the room, they just go back to whatever it is they want. They just don't think about it. Don't see the harm in a lot of things. "It's just Ribena..."

    Okay.
    Deep breath.

    moan over. thanks for listening.

When my stepchildren were young I always watered down cordials. I never bought the very cheap ones as I think they taste bad, but cheap or dear they always put the same amount in - so I watered it when they were in bed.

Is everybody else getting a bit scared about managing, what with food, fuel, etc? I've never been this nervous before, and I've never known such a lot of "bad news" coming through. I think if it wasn't for reading this thread I would be starting to panic a bit. I know I'll be able to manage one way or another, but I think there are a lot of people who won't through no fault of their own.

Like my mother & grandmother used to do, we (our family) have decided that this winter, what with the increase prices and possibly food shortages, our weekly menu will be the same each week. I know alot of people will see this as boring but a well planned menu which includes all the nutrients we require will save us money and enable us to potentially bulk buy some of the items.
I don't do supermarkets so I'm not drawn into the Bogof/special offer hype, which in my opinion just encourages you to spend more anyway.
I just need a credit crunch menu now so will let you know whats decided:D

I really really don`t want to scare anyone but I have been chatting to some local farmers. Word on the street is that no-one can get their second cut silage in, some haven`t made hay and no-one has been able to get their grain in. I have never ever heard of it being so dire. Passing the time of day with a neighbour who is just back from canada, he said that the weather was like here. Canada has massive wheat fields

Talk is that food will be very very expensive by christmas. Make your own conclusions but I have been ordering a lot of flour, white will keep 12 months, wholemeal for 6 months. I have spent the whole day re-vamping my food storage under the stairs, where it is dark and cool. Blow me, I had a little windfall and I have blown all of what was left on big lock and lock boxes. Oh well

Kittie, thanks for the info, forewarned is forearmed! Just been thinking, you aren`t in any danger of being flooded at all are you? What made me think about it was I read about a bloke who had been flooded last year, and he said when he got replacements for stuff, he tried to get things he could put higher than floor level (tv on wall etc.)

Fortunately, we have a v small box room /glory hole upstairs and I think I will turf all the clutter out and put any stocks of food I can get in there. As we now live in an area that is very flat, and on the coast, I think I would go crazy if all my hard won stores were ruined.

Just on the Scottish news now: potato and wheat crops in danger of rot because of the wet summer and can put the prices up! "Farmers are hoping for a crop saving dry spell" the reporter just said.

Beccajte - what about stocking up on oats ???

They can be used for loads of things and the price will go up is the Farmers problems are as bad as what is being said.

You can do porridge, bulk out mince, flapjacks, etc.
