Interesting blog to read through to see how somehow is coping with cooking WW2 style.

Also lots of info on BBC Peoples War website (lost the link).

:rotfl: :rotfl: this thread is such a tonic and I`m sitting here holding my ribs laughing :rotfl: :rotfl:

my dh escaped on a walk with his camera. Weaker sex, us, my eye!!!

I have hunted high and low for every lock & lock I have ever used in the right stackable size and my bed is full of dumped stuff. I have unwrapped every sack of flour and packed and labelled it all. I have 2 stacks each about 3`6" tall. LOL and I am so glad I have done it. It`s the old story, dh will come back to peace and tranquillity while my back aches, no wonder they live longer with a lifetime partner. Weight of flour   a cool 46 kg and all shipton mill, which I use when I can and most organic. My house is now messy but my flour is safe and good for 6 months and 12 months

I went to T on my bike today and made sure I took both panniers and boy they were weighed down once I put the barley and buckwheat in. Luckily the packs are good and airtight so they can disappear into cheap boxes as they are

I`m just waiting for my oats now

from Goodness diirect. We can`t live without oats :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

    Evening all

I have been following this thread with increasing interest..... Today -someone was smiling on me.. we nipped to the NAAFI for Tesco bread flour -still had none in -so we decided to go to one a bit further out..its normally €1.49 a bag... the last lot i got was on offer @ 74c... amazingly today the 2nd NAAFI had 13 bags left so i loaded it all in ... got to the checkout and it went through at 37c a bag :T ... I did ask if they had anymore in -but it seems its an end of stock item as they are stopping dealing with tesco  .. So at least i now have 20 bags -enough for 60 loaves -about 30 weeks worth if we are good so with fresh yeast, salt etc (i don't use fat or milk) im going to be able to make loaves for approx 12p plus gas:D

Now i just need to get more rice n pasta and a few other essentials for winter -just in case we get a bad one out here... so veg suet, emergency longlife milk, lentils, beans etc for hubbies soups for work etc

We are lucky out here as come autumn/winter huge nets of onions, carrots, cabbage will start turning up in the supermarkets ...they even sell apples/oranges by the bucket :p
Im roasting and freezing tomatoes, peppers, courgettes etc from the tubs in the garden -so they will come in usefull for winter... but im running out of freezer space:rolleyes:
I think this weekend will be spent making draught excluders and lists of things i want to get on standby...
I don't think im in panic mode yet -but as there is only me n hubby it isn't quite so bad..but its great to have other people on here as im sure you will mention things i had never thought of :p
keep at it everyone -we will get through it as always :D

I got Waitrose wholemeal breadflour with the save £15 offer - 99p a 1.5 kilo bag - makes nice bread.

If you add half a teaspoon of bicard to stewing sour fruit, you will need far less sugar.

Didn't know about the bicarb, but would usually add a bit of cinnamon to cooking apples when I am stewing them for myself and it works fine

Lidl used to sell 500g pack of red lentils for about 49p and they were 84 pence at Sainsbury.

Lidl now do not seem to sell them and today they were 96 pence at Sainsbury!!!!

Must go and check out the chinese supermarket in Leeds - just glad I bought a few packs at Lidl while they still had them.

I bought 8 bags of bread flour today, 3 bags of plain flour,12 cartons of long life milk and some bags of noodles and pasta in Lidl.

Even DH noticed the prices had gone up!

Student DD(19) needed kitchen equipment and pots and pans etc for next year so as I had a load of nectar points we got DH to drive us to a huge Sainsbury.

She got all the stuff she needed, there was a 25% discount on homeware and clothes so I treated myself to a top and cardigan as well. We got soap powder, washing liquid, wet wipes, shampoo etc. etc.

The total came to £120! But saved £20 with the discount and another £10 on special deals, so total was £90 - using my Nectar points -I paid

    Under£3!!!:j

DH has agreed to take me to buy a couple of sacks of potatoes, onions and carrots once they are bagged up for winter. That should help a lot!

ps: what do I do when I DO get those beasties?
They keep popping up in my kitchen. Even in closed containers!! I've had to dump too much stuff already due to them!.. open up a container of couscous and out flies the beasties!!..
Where do the come from and how do I get rid of em????

The main storage is not in the kitchen by the way.. so hoping my flour stays out of reach.

If they're weevils, they come with the goods. If freezing doesn't stop them, or if they are pantry moths, try this link

I wonder if a big bulk bag of porridge oats in a spare room would be vulnerable ? Should I freeze it for 24 hrs or will it be ok ? I cant see anything odd looking about it.
