I've been thinking...(!! Well I had a bath and that always makes me think LOL)... instead of us all running out buying up every bag of flour/pasta/rice/potatoes/oil/onions/blahblah in sight ---wouldn't it be more sensible to hoard CASH which can't go off or get weevils innit ? And then just buy foodstuffs as & when we need more ??

    Hello all

I know what you mean mardtha... i think its a case of finding the right balance... afterall if you put £20 away -how much interest would it make and how much would you then be able to get (food wise) for your money in a few weeks/months compared to now?

Im still trying to save as much money as possible -but just redirecting some funds to buy a few extra staple items to cushion any food increases

Well i went upstairs as i have 4 wheely lockable boxes under the bed -and after picking up the tip on here -i have emptied one and now got 14 bags of bread flour in it in the basement..i will empty the others over the next few days ;)
    so I have made a start :D

The reason I want to have a good supply of basics is not only to save some money but so if it is icy this winter I do not have to go out and slip about the pavements to shop.

With six of us at home I go through stuff really fast and want to have food in the house so if any of the DDs are ill I can look after them without having to dash out to go shopping every day.

A can of dried milk has gone from about a pound to £1.49 in the last couple of months - that is a 50% increase!!!

Did a shop yesterday and added a few extra bits for the store cupboard. Went to Asda and ended up buying 8 of their 5p curry sauces !!! It is so yummy although it has gone up by 1p !!

Also bought more flour and a few extra tins of bits - ignored the comments of "is there a war coming" from DH :)

Off to a car boot in a mo with DS so we can try and find a few bits towards Christmas pressies and maybe some material for draft exculders and curtains.

We sorted out the spare room the other day and I have found an old sewing machine that was given to me by my mum. Going to sit down with it later and see if I can remember how to use it :)

Things are a bit stressed here though because little brother has been rushed to hospital and needs an operation - he is quite someway from us too so tired out from travelling to and from him at the moment.

Also I am stocking on food rather then money because as Elona said dried milk has gone up 50% and I am never going to find a savings account that gives me 50% so to me stocking up on food is a bit better savings wise.

So sorry to hear about your brother, I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Good luck with your bargain hunting today. Never mind the `witty` comments, you just keep on doing what you are doing, if there was a shortage of anything the `witty ones` would be the first to moan!

I'm stocking up a bit too --didnt mean to sme smart, was just wondering out loud where to draw the line to be sensible. I never was very good at sensible...:)
Plus the talk of weevils was putting me off storing things tbh.

We really don't have the room to stock up on all that much, however I'm trying to go through cupboards to chuck things out that we don't need or use. It's been quite therapeutic. Now I have in mind to stock up with a few extra bits and pieces, more tins of fruit and veg more for variety than anything else, flour, UHT milk (for extreme emergencies like when the weather is so bad at lunchtime I can't get out to pick up a pint from town to bring home) and dried stuff purely because it makes sense to buy these offers as and when we see them. Which reminds me, I need to get noodles, vinegar, tomato puree and tinned pineapple - we love our homemade sweet and sour!

The weevil thing is a bit of a pest, so I am very grateful to the lady who told us about freezing flour first. I have been looking at tinned stuff as a way of keeping some stocks in because it usually lasts a long time, hopefully `bugs` can`t get into it, and I only have a certain amount of freezer space, plus it is unaffected by any power cuts.

I have never experienced so many power cuts in my life as I have since we moved here 4 years ago, and the water sometimes goes off too, so I like to have some bottled water in just in case.

    Hi All

I am still looking round trying to find storage space - I think the lock box under the bed will get emptied and used to keep tins in quite possibly - gutted as a few years ago when we moved in here we have a small storage room that was jsut left standing which had two room length shelves and our freezer lived in there - it was going to be my pantry - it was certainly big enough that if i had needed i could have stocked it for at least 4 months and had no worry or need to leave my flat - but stupidly bf said 'oh we could make it into a little study type' room - and i let him. So no pantry for me.

I have cleared out a small cupboard though which has two shelves which i should be able to use and I also have a stackable box but i dont really have the space in the bleeding kitchen now which is where they were stacked as one box has a jumbo sized bag of dog food in it but i thnk with a bit of shifting i should be able to move it around so i cna stack them again so one box, one cupboard and a wheelie box

As far as getting to the shop im ok as i live next door to a coop and there is a small off license over the road but its getting supplies to these shops as are roads are not the safest. Think I should really get back to hand baking bread again, I have neglected it somewhat the last few months.
    Time to find me again

With all this talk of food shortages, when I was shopping I saw that you could buy frozen sliced onions. Anyway, I got some and tried them in a caserole last night. They were absolutely fine, so I think I will keep some in as a standby in case.
