There was something in yesterday's Metro saying something similar. I've got a pretty good flour stock (and a pretty good storecupboard) but I might start adding to it.

annie, the farmers haven`t got enough fodder in for their animals so either they sell some animals before winter or they buy in very expensive winter feed ie costs will rise dramatically and I am talking meat as well as grain of all sorts. Potatoes and onions are sitting in wet fields and so will not keep well when they are raised and so on. It really is quite a disaster scenario re food this year again

Oh so looks like food shopping at christmas is goign to be near on impossible again.

We struggle to get by as it is with food and all the bills paid on time and all these price hikes are jsut setting us back even further. I wanted to volunteer in a local nursing home to get carers experience (its ultimately a job i want to do) but i can see me having to take on more paid shifts at a job i hate just to help keep food on the table. Dont get me wrong im thankful i have the job but even with 8 GCSEs, 4 A Levels and an NVQ i still cant seem to get any work higher than a cashier!
    Time to find me again

thank you for explaining that kittie, farmers must be very worried.
I am off work for a week from next Saturday , and will be spending a lot of it getting ready for winter, so will be following your example and stocking up now whilst I can afford it.
Pleased I grow a lot of my own veg it all helps keep costs down.

I just found out (by coincidence) that my 15 yrs old daughter has been getting up in the middle of the night for the purpose of calling her boyfriend in the USA!!!

There is no telling how big the bill is going to be as I have to wait another month for it come in. Haven't figured out yet how to get the info faster. (no online look up with our provider)

I can't trust anything she says in terms of how often and for how long, but I am dreading it.

She's ran up a 600 euro phone bill before and I am not even done paying for that!!

We thought we had her blocked off sufficiently but there's no beating her getting up in the middle of the night..

Then when i read the messages here with the predictions... I feel like I"m going to cry.

I used to share a flat with an alcoholic who used to make long rambling calls to the US etc in the night. After the first phone bill came in we got a pin number put on the phone which we 'forgot' to tell her about.

Beccatje - That's terrible. Does your phone system have any code on it which you can punch in before a call can be made? Perhaps it's time, if this is the second incident, for some of her precious possession to be sold to help pay the bill. This may sound tough but she needs to be made to realise that money doesn't grow on trees. Perhaps you can disconnect the phone and take it to bed with you in future?

I thin the most fair way would be too total up her amounts, [STRIKE]ask[/STRIKE] tell her to pay over a 6-12 month period then hand her the paper to get a saturday job.
  • Sympathies, beccatje.

I've been watching the fields around me too and am intending to stock up with flour, rice and instant potato. I can't hold enough stock of real potatoes, I can grow some but not enough and although we dislike the instant stuff, if that's all we've got .... I don't think that pasta's going to be cheap for long either, so that'll have to go onto the list. This time I'm buying decent quality pasta - Tesco's value brand is horrid!

Off to look for storage crates - good idea, kittie, thank you for the heads up.
If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!! :D
