    Hi all

Spoke to a few nieghbours last night.

Theres three others on my front. One has vertical blinds, the other has horizontal blinds and the other does have curtains but shes put them up on the net curtain 'ropes'. - you know the type with the adhesive hooks at the end - wondering if i can do this now?? and maybe add a few extra hooks to help support the net so it doesnt have to hang so far down.

Like i said i do currently have an extendable shower rail in there with the curtains on so i do have some privacy but ut doesnt look very nice form inside and i want to get a second set of curtains hung.

Also should add - my coat hooks that i hung yesterday came crashing down last night onto my dog  (hes fine) but the wall that was also perfect for the strips now has the stupid things still stuck to them. Think i will screw them on properly with my very limited diy skills

When i rang to enquire about how i was to hang curtains etc they said once the tenant accepts the property it then becomes their roblem - obviously though if there is a problem etc with teh workings of the flat (ie taps/boiler/heating etc) then they will come out to fix it (at their leisure i might add) our gate was destroyed in a storm last year - and was only mended may this year after we wrote them/rang them etc abotu 30 times as we have a small dog which ment he couldnt be let out into the communal garden without being on a lead etc (he is supervised when hes outside and cleaned up after i should add before i get a row).

that's just terrible, councils are rubbish aren't they  it took 6 years to get the fence replaced round our garden which was all broken & rotten, we couldn't keep our dog in or other dogs out,the fences are council responsibility to maintain but they never bothered and prob won't bother with this one either.

I wish I had a solution for you

by the way did you mean curtain wires when you said ropes hon? maybe they would work if you could get those hooks that you can put on the wall with out screws or glue I can't remember what the hooks are called but they are being advertised on the telly a lot lately :o

here's what I was thinking of,thread your curtain wire through your curtains and then hook on to these at either end, you can put these hook on the wall without screws or glue not sure if they would be strong enough though, maybe you could email them and ask? There's quite a few different kinds
The Jumbo hook can hold up to 3kg's. For full holding strength leave the hook on the surface for one hour before hanging anything on it.

I'm probably showing my ignorance a mile wide at this point - never having lived in Council property - but if a Council official wont listen to/deal with a request for a maintenance problem they have "created" - then would it be possible to go to your local Councillor. Can only speak as a private home-owner here - but have always found them anxious to "do their bit" to help as soon as they see that you are the type of person who is concerned that the neighbourhood as a whole is looked after.

    Morning all

Not sure if this is any help sammy -or if anyone has mentioned them -but what about "tension rods"..

    http://www.nets2go.co.uk/net-curtains/accessories.php

they fit into the window recess and you twist them and the extend so that they wedge against the walls.
I used to get mine in wilkos.. you will need to measure the recess so that you get the right sizings.. Try not to get one that has to extend to far as it makes them more likely to bend under the weight of heavy curtains...
    Hope thats some help

The curtains here are a pain as i always have floor length curtains and really wide (that way they will fit nearly any window;) )-but out here the hooks and tracks are different so i can't put my own up  luckily the army have curtains up when you move in and luckily the colours are ok -but they finish at half mast...about 2" below the window sills  .. still at least i guess we are putting 3 years of wear n tear on their curtains not our own :p
I got all floor length lined cream curtains for moving into our own home -then we extended for 5 years -but when we do move in im putting those up and in winter i have that many spare pairs of curtains im going to get my lovely mum to turn some into exta "under curtains" :D

Our front windows quite big and we used tension rods for nets.......they were fine and held up for nearly two years but what with cats sitting on the window sill and kids pulling the curtains back to see who's at the door etc. they eventually had their day. Now we don't have nets -wish we did but OH likes the window without them (can't have my own way all the time......lol)
In the smaller windows upstairs I've used stick on hooks and the ordinary curtain wire and as the space is very small they've been fine........think one fell off once but I'd got extra so no problem.

I think someone else mentioned it, but the lintels above the windows are not usually that big, they extend some way each side of the window - about 6 inches? and are usually about 3 inches deep. So, in theory, you should be able to hang the curtains either higher than this, or as we have, put the pole holders wider than the window so that you miss the lintel on each side.

Hope this helps - and love the thread

Yeah this is what is currently in my window now - it seems to be doing its job better than anythign else ive tried so i think i will keep it up - after all me and boyfriend are better at knowing when we are cold so its not really a problem - we survived all alst winter with it but with rising fuel prices i thought id attempt to get some better curtains up there on a pole. However may get new curtains as ours are those tab tops and i think if i put ones with the hole on them (so theres no gap from rail to curtain top) then it might help slightly.

Other thign i will be doign today is digging out an extension lead so i can put me hooks back up! It looked really good too so want to get it back up there asap otherwise its one more piece of carp sat in my bedroom

Also with capped prices - i was talking to the swalec man in town (stands with his boards etc) and i asked abotu the discount till 2009 capped prices and his reply was 'whats the point? because its 2009 next year......' how is that helpful?? ALthough i have looked at it again and its actually until 2010 - is it worht goign with them?? baring in mind my electric for 3 months was £53.37 and my gas for 3 months was £132.84 (but thats baring in mind i missed a payment of £50 from last month so it is actually about £83.)
