On the subject of curtains:
Just been visiting MIL and noticed that she hangs another set of curtains in the window recess using net curtain wires. These are in a dark fabric and denser than nets but not heavy.......seemed like a really good idea to give extra warmth in the winter and also to cut light in the bright dawns of summer. On the outside of the recess normal curtains hang.
I am definitely going to do this myself as the fabric is not heavily gathered and will therefore be fairly economical.
I know it sounds like a daft question but does she just hang these up at night?
I would imagine it would be really dark in there if they are up all of the time.0 -
What a huge difference across the land! Portsmouth water is less than half the price of Welsh Water (Dwr Cymru) and we know what it does all day in Wales - well every time I've been there anyway. We have DC's water, it's the fourth most expensive in the land. The third most expensive is in the district we moved from, on the other side of the country. We must have good taste.
The huge gap in the cost of water is iniquitous. Apparently we'd be no better off here if we were on a meter. I'd feel no guilt at all watering my new turf if it needed it but it hasn't stopped raining all summer.0 -

Apologies for not explaining very well!
The curtains are pulled to the side in the day time.......being of finer fabric than normal curtains and not gathered on a tape they take up little room. They would however, also be easy to take down if wished. They just provide an extra layer up against the window at night.0 -

skintmama - thanks for that i was thinking of getting one of the curtain rods for nets and using that - will have to go measure window now i think and see how much its going to cost - then get a cheap pair of shorter curtains.
as for the water rates - im startign to worry now. my rent has gone up from £47 to £55 a week, water has gone form £6 to £9 a week, council tax from £78 to £84 a month and not to mention food prices rising - and ive got me and boyfriend working adn we are still i would say below the breadline.
I was reading in the paper on sunday that there are more unemployed people now than ever because it simply isnt worth it to work with all the benefits they lose and then its the honest hard workers who get taxed to support them. I mean I work 11 hrs a week - cant wait to up this in september when little one starts full time school though, and my boyfriend works 30 - 40 hours a week depending on whether he has to attend hospital appointments btu he normalyl works from 7am - 6pm at night and we are scraping by literally and we live in a council rented property.
My friend is on benefits and she has no interest in working because its simply not worth it to her and she has a 4 year old so the same amount of child free time as i get, her boyfriend claims job seekers but does do odd jobs on the side and they claim every benefit goign and have just brought a LCD flatscreen TV.      :mad:Time to find me again0 -

It is sickening isn't it? I'm not putting down the people that can't work here, but I know there are people out there claiming what they shouldn't and usually they're the ones with nice plasma or LCD tv's. I'd love one but with the cost of fuel, food, school clothing (don't get me started on that one) it just gets harder and harder.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. For us, even though we're working things are gettting tougher. We got a few things through Freecycle that were almost new (wouldn't know otherwise), we've put these away for Christmas for the youngest. She'll get other things as well bought for her, but that takes a little pressure off of us. Hopefully no one will think this wrong of us.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. In Scotland the water bill is included in the Council Tax. It kind of softens the blow as you only have one rant when the annual renewal comes in." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

Unixgirl - well I certainly don't think it's wrong to give your kids second hand pressies, what are antiques after all?! lol! My lot still get second hand stuff as well as new stuff, they don't mind one bit, in fact ds is fast becoming a freecycle addict, though it means he can list all the stuff I'm getting rid of and take responsibility for that as well!
Well my latest money saving has involved buying a resmoska cooker, got it on Saturday and haven't turned on my oven since, going to see how long I can manage without it! Am also thinking much harder about food money saving, and how to stretch things further than ever, though did get some comments that I was taking the adding oats to everything slightly too far when the burgers were more oats than meat the other day!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000
