I'm not having a dig but just curious as to where all that monthly income went. 3000 / 4000 per month is a huge income for someone with no mortgage /rent to pay. Loads of disposable income there.

  • Dan, how old are you? What model Audi is it? Engine size? You say it's a cheap runaround but not if you pay £300 a month to insure it.
My Debt Free Diary I owe:

    Aug 16 £19519 Dec 16 £17708

Yeah I wasn't sure how to spell lamborgini :o

Dan.M even thought he phones are in contract you can still get them to lower the tariffs for you. Get them lowered to the minimum and then cancel one when contract runs out.

What are your plans for the car in the garage that's in bits? If it is to do it up and sell it then not having a full time job gives you the time to do so. Even though you can do the servicing yourself the filters etc cost so you have to up the amount you put aside for this.

Pay only minimum on credit cards until you can earn extra cash. Have you thought about getting part time in a pub/bar/club. That could be your entertainment too would save some money there.

Oh just thought.... How old are you? How many hours do you work? You could be entitled to Working Tax Credits. Have a look at https://www.entitledto.co.uk

Right insurance is now cut down to £176 per month.

The biggest part of my problem is the car in the garage.

As silly and stupid and crazy, immature, emotional as it sounds - I'm attached to it, spent too much money on it making it go faster and competeting in it, and i just don't want to let it go for nothing compared to what i've spent on it.

    Huge problem.

    get rid of the Audi!!!!!

Get a small, cheap car with some of the money (ie up to £1000 maximum), use what is leftover to pay off some debt and get car insurance which is less that £300 per year, rather than per month!!

It doesn't make sense to run a car which is costing you more per year to insure than you could buy a decent car for in total!

Edit: even £176 is a HUGE amount per month for insurance. My partner's son is 21, drives an R reg Rover and pays something like £350 per year.

I'm afraid being attached to a load of bits of metal which will eventually wear out is never going to help your current financial situation - it's just metal sitting on rubber and you'll NEVER re-coup what you've spent on it ;)

  • This is going to sound harsh. But. Bit of tough love for you. You had a great salary. Paid no rent. And have ended up in 11k of debt.

This shows that you could not afford your lifestyle before you lost your job let alone after it.

If I was you...or you were my son....I'd sell the car, buy a cheap to insure banger, cut entertainment out for a couple of months, probably sell the car in the garage (which you shouldnt have to pay road tax for...get a SORN) Ring up the mobile providers and say you can't pay and see what they can do. Also your internet provider. No new clothes for 6 months. Sell everything you no longer need on ebay.

Then...when you get a new job and I'm sure you will, you will have a fair more sensible attitiude to money and might even be able to save some cash to eventually move out of home and live independantly.
