The revenge of the stripey socks - a DFW adventure

My mum was pretty old school in a way, she cooked from scratch for every meal. Made all our bread, roast every Sunday that kind of thing. If we had chips they were made out of potatoes and deep-fried. I couldn't believe it when I went to a friends house and they had chips out of an oven
I have to admit I was very unappreciative at the time!! I wanted all that junk food like those potato things in letter shapes!
Abel & Cole is very nice, I really enjoy getting the box and I like that you know what farm your food has come from. Plus i like eating seasonally. I'm really into parsnips at the moment but looking forward to getting things like peas in the summer!
Of course nothing beats eating food you have grown yourself - you must have such a sense of achievement from it!I've got my own flat :j:j
Now I have to pay the bills

Oh Piq thats funny
I was veggie for about 12 years (til married farmer) the reason was cheap, horrible, meat - lots of grissle and fat - still can't bear the stuff. I am very particular about any meat I do eat - if I go anywhere I am not sure about I say I am veggie.
Make up- people do hide from you when you turn up with yet another courgette - there are down sides to overproducing
:jMy dry board pen works on the larder freezer and fridges.:j
I feel a list coming on
You know the kind the contents herein of said appliance is;
Spag bog x 3
Cod x 1
Bacon x 2
Veggie pies x2
Wren x 1
Minced beef x 1
Soup and various unnamed things that look like each other;
Tomato based x 3
Curry????? maybe x 4
Soup - no idea x 10

I have to be honest I would probably turn off the lights and pretend to be out if you came at me with courgettes, unless I'm making ratatouille I'm not a fan!!!
However rhubarb or gooseberries - bring them on!!!
(Plus decent carrots and tom's taste sooo much better than supermarket offerings!!)I've got my own flat :j:j

Well done you - I have got from the library - my god what a find the library is I am so so so so so dumb. I have so many books (100's and 100's all bought) here and have probably like many people gotten into the habit of thinking oh that looks interesting and bingo its bought.
I can't remember who said on someone's SOA - make friends with your library - it will save you tonnes.
So ebay , amazon and the other ones ,:j :T
So so so true
Anyway I got -
Frugal feasts - Christine McFadden
Frugal living for Dummies - Deborah Taylor Hough you said that, not us :rotfl: :rotfl:
NO WASTE LIKE HOME - Penney Poyzer
Already thinking - wow to lots of bits of the frugal living book and ergh to lots of the waste book.
As for recycling wrens in the freezer - its all good karma - and the bird teaching guy is very cute  - so means I get to phone him again:rolleyes:  and say hi. At my age it pays to be blatant:rotfl:  , (hey I [strike]think[/strike] might be older:rotfl: ) did you wear the potentialy low cut blouse ?:rotfl: (OH not listening at the mo) Don't suppose you'd get much eating out of a wren would you (joke honest - mind you you'd only need about a breadcrumb for stuffing it wouldnt you?)wouldnt know google doesnt offer a recipe
Speaking of recycling can you recycle hamsters into chilli????
NO YoU Friggen Can't !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!      :Tthat was un called for !!!!!:rotfl: :rotfl:
Nearly humiliated myself in the library but thought better of it by asking for a 'Delia' book - I don't do Delia - I know some folk do - but I am definately not one of them. (no offence delia) delia doesnt like you anymoreshe spoke highly of you but now , nadder ,,,nothing , sorry your loss
I am also 'trying out' a dry board pen from the college (borrowing is not the same as stealing) to see if its suitable to write on the outside of my freezer - cunning plan is to scare any potential house buyers by listing the dead things in the freezer. Seriously though thinking I can write up the list of whats in there and wipe it off - SHEER ACT OF BRILLIANCE???? probably not but I am thinking of gettting a bit more organised.
sorry if I seem a little off ,,,,,,,,still recovering from earlier sexypost by piq :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think that would be an excellent idea.
Just to add to your reading, have you read our frugal ladies diary on OLDSTYLE?
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1157641
I even managed to match her at some points *rubs badge with pride* but then again 50p a day in my house was for four, so not too bad really:rotfl:
Weezl has also had a frugal baby..not sure if it is down to the diet though;)Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:0 -

Hampster.....what's a tchikudu?
Glad it wasn't only my mum who was "creative" in the kitchen...anyone for lasagne made with baked beans (they went in everything, yum yum) and natural yoghurt instead of cheese sauce? Or cakes made with apple juice rather than sugar - not good if you get the quantities wrong.....
That reminds me, need to start thinking of all the baking I've got to do for DD's birthday party *evil cackle*0 -
Well my mum tried her best when cooking. I thought that:-
Sausages had to be hard black on the outside incase of 'germs', same tactics with onions. Onion gravy was a test of the teeth.
Jelly had to be chiselled out of the bowl and ice crystals were an integral part of it
Sunday apple tart - we only ate the middle the rest had to be soaked for 24 hrs before it let go of the plate
fried eggs had to be eaten in one whole piece, as you couldn't cut them
I could go on with the cooking techniques of most things.... mainly came down to boil it furiously, fry it solid, roast it to a cinder.
One day my father declared at the table -'I'm taking over the cooking, I want the children to survive'. He then worked all day and came home to cook. Trouble was he was brilliant and it was a long time before my mother could raise her game to his standard.
That is not to say we didn't have the 'experements' from him. reading some of the above brings a smile (much needed at the moment). :rotfl:
What saved me was a night class in cooking - previously my own disasters include floating fat oxtail stew, no use of seasoning in my food, and the self welding pies.
The class taught me to 'enjoy' making the things I was going to eat. I can close my eyes and still remember the smell of things I made, taking them home on a bus, with people sniffing the air and saying mmmmmmmm.
I wonder what my dd's are saying about my cooking?[STRIKE]Fed up of being kippered by kids - new resolve - the NO word. Still at this[/STRIKE] Dam they struck again!!
Stay focused on the bigger plan - :rolleyes:0 -
My DD went through a phase recently where my cooking wasn't good enough - one evening she sat down to dinner, took one look at my delicious meal, sniffed and said "Granny cooks nice dinners" *sob*. She also likes everything the cook at nursery makes......
So the other night I cooked a normal meal and said casually "The nursery cook gave me this recipe as she said you love it"....the whole plate went!0
