Yep, thats how I feel about it. The builder was nice too, when he was pulling bricks out from the centre of the skip, he said, its more room for us - they have to pay to get rid of stuff don't they, so it helped him too.

As for frozen wrens in the freezer ....:eek::eek: :rotfl:

Well done you - I have got from the library - my god what a find the library is I am so so so so so dumb. I have so many books (100's and 100's all bought) here and have probably like many people gotten into the habit of thinking oh that looks interesting and bingo its bought.

I can't remember who said on someone's SOA - make friends with your library - it will save you tonnes.

    So so so true

    Anyway I got -

    Frugal feasts - Christine McFadden
Frugal living for Dummies - Deborah Taylor Hough
NO WASTE LIKE HOME - Penney Poyzer

Already thinking - wow to lots of bits of the frugal living book and ergh to lots of the waste book.

As for recycling wrens in the freezer - its all good karma - and the bird teaching guy is very cute - so means I get to phone him again and say hi. At my age it pays to be blatant (OH not listening at the mo) Don't suppose you'd get much eating out of a wren would you (joke honest - mind you you'd only need about a breadcrumb for stuffing it wouldnt you?)

Speaking of recycling can you recycle hamsters into chilli????

Nearly humiliated myself in the library but thought better of it by asking for a 'Delia' book - I don't do Delia - I know some folk do - but I am definately not one of them. (no offence delia)

I am also 'trying out' a dry board pen from the college (borrowing is not the same as stealing) to see if its suitable to write on the outside of my freezer - cunning plan is to scare any potential house buyers by listing the dead things in the freezer. Seriously though thinking I can write up the list of whats in there and wipe it off - SHEER ACT OF BRILLIANCE???? probably not but I am thinking of gettting a bit more organised. :)

I get my veg and fruit delivered each week via Abel & Cole. It is more expensive than supermarket shopping but I like it soo much better and I hate the pressure that supermarkets put on farmers to accept shocking prices.

I actually find that I spend just the same as before though, as I got to the supermarket less and I normally have the basics in for an easy meal.

So A&C really decide what I am going to eat!! I check online to see what I am getting the following week and work things out around that. It makes it a fun way of meal planning and they have a lot of recipes on their website so when I run out of ideas for beetroot or carrots or something I look on there.

I bought my meat this week at a farmers market and I think I would rather buy cheaper cuts at the farmers market and have a few veggie meals during the week as oppose to getting my meat at the supermarket.

Although that is my ideal, I still go into Mr T's as it is 5 mins walk from me and sometimes it is just too easy and cheap to shop in there!

(I should probably add that I am DF now and on better money so have more cash around to spend but still on here as trying to keep on the wagon! I know how easy it is to fall off!!!)

    Hi there Make up

We try to only buy local meat, eggs, cheese, fish, veg where we can - like you say its much nicer.

been a bit wierd having lodger boy here as he 'doesnt do' veggies - means my shopping budget has gone up alot.

btw - have soon seen the price of cheese lately its about 6-7+ quid a kilo

    its outrageous

unix - hope things are ok.....xxx

I just can't understand people who don't like veggies full stop. I mean of course there are some veg you might not like but it isn't like they all taste the same??!!

Some things are lovely raw, for example I hardly ever have cooked spinach but in a salad like Piq suggested it is fab!

However I do come from a very non-food-fad family, my mum was often cooking different things and you were expected to eat everything (although both me and my sister drew the line at lambs tongues  ). My sister was the faddy one in our house and still is to some extent (she used to be no fish except fishfingers, only certain veg - although she loves brussels, no eggs, no tea, no mayo) Her tastes have changed as she has got older though and will definitely try things and eats a lot more than she did but some things remain - still definitely no onions or mushrooms!!!

So maybe if you were brought up without eating many veg you feel that is how you are?!

hi fay, sorry to hear about your house worries.

We're not doing very well on the grocery budget, i think most of it's OH fault (of course it is - i'm very angelic!) lol I've told him we can't go shopping together again, and this month all we can get is fruit, veg and an odd loaf if it's reduced. We really do need to empty some stuff from the freezer. Why do we keep buying stuff for it? it's FULL to bursting.

do you think you can share your veggie diary with us (me)???? please???
Our raised beds are done now, i'm back at work tomorrow booo hooo so will start my seed trays off over the weekend hopefully

Hi LT - well done on the beds being done. You might not want to share your veggie diary with me cos I am in the frozen north - and do things a bit later on.

Makeup our families sound similar - for years though all I wanted was a NORMAL meal. Mother didn't cook normal stuff. Mind you my mother was not exactly NORMAL. (not in a good way!!)

But I have sown in trays all my tomatoes, peppers and some sweetpeas.

Next i will sow some lettuce and rocket and herbs like basil, parsley (althought I have just 'rescued' two pots of parsley from lidl and now have two rows planted out in a bed in the greenhouse which are lovely rows of parsely now) and I will sow my annual hardy flowers - marigolds, etc

I am thinking of banning my DS from coming to the supermarket - its fine when we get lots of bargains but now the not-whoopsied things are going into the trolley - the naughty naughtly boy x

guess i'll start the toms, peppers and loads of sweetpeas. Like you i know i can sell the spares so don't mind if i get lots of extra's plus i want to be able to make lots of pasta sauces this year so i can save money long term - probably won't happen but i can give it a go.
i hate that i have to go back to work tomorrow, i know it will be a rest compared to the work we've been doing whilst off (i actually hurt rather than ache now) but my headaches have started again, guess it's definately work related.

My mum couldn't cook at all, still can't! She's the reason I'm a vegetarian, meat either bled all over the plate or was like a piece of hardened leather. I still believe I couldn't get salmonella if I wanted it, as she ensured during my childhood that I was completely immune through eating semi cooked chicken every week :rotfl:
