British tourists are the most ignorant arrogant tourists i have ever come across. Im sure some still think we are a huge empire and they have rights over whatever country they decide to go to.

LOL but so true, i try and avoid the traditional British resorts.
  • BEST; Has to be a tie between Antarctica and Costa Rica and New Zealand and Alaska.

WORST; My bottom 3 are Sri Lanka (just wasn't keen), South Africa (rushed into hospital after an epileptic fit and spent weeks in 1 hotel waiting for a doctor to fly home with us) and Houston (landed there on September 10th and was going to leave for Mexico on the 11th but unfortunately left about a week later as the US system of allocating seats on flights that have been cancelled is pants)

Ok the last 2 weren't the places fault but it did ruin the holidays.

Ooh I can agree with Murcia...and raise you one and say Cartegena is even worse!

Cairns = blackpool with heat - the shops are awful!
Ah yes, Murcia, forgot about that place. A holiday so bad I've blanked it from my memory. The only place that I've walked into a pub (not a bar a pub) & the room went silent as me, oh & 2 kids walked in (you could almost see the tumbleweed blowing across the floor). It was basically an east end pub in the middle of Spain, not a spanish person or anything remotely spanish in sight.

Which Cartagena? We spent one day there (Colombia) on a cruise and I thought it was amazing. I've asked DH if we can go back every year since.

I've liked everywhere I've ever been though wasn't that fussed about Tenerife, Mexico and New Zealand (north island).
  • Best - Aitutaki, amazing people, stunning lagoon and still quite undeveloped, and the amazing scenery of South Island New Zealand

Worst - Tijuana - it was just horrible!!!

By Murcia I presume people are referring to the area around the coast there. Murcia is quite a way inland, nowhere near the airport.

We visit the area about 3 times a year and our experiences are very different. The city itself is quite pleasant, but nowhere near as nice as its near neighbour, Elche. That is a real Spanish city with lots of heritage and not many tourists. A little Spanish helps too.

You are right about the tourist bars, pubs and restaurants though. But there are many, many wonderful Spanish bars and restaurants where they do not serve John Smith bitter, fish and chips or burgers. They are also a hell of a lot cheaper. The problem, as always, is finding them. We are fortunate in having friends in the region so we had some help.

Mass tourism doesn't do a lot of places many favours. But make the effort and the real Spain (or wherever) is there. Even Corfu had its genuine parts if you looked.
