I really want to go and see what it's like, travel is all about experiencing different things, the fact that not long ago, there wasn't anything there, really interests me. I fancy going dune bashing out in the desert as well, but with the hotel not far away...as I'm a scaredy cat.....that's a good idea.

LOL - my husband tried to video the dune bashing, from the middle back seat...all we have is: * whoosh * (sounds of screaming) there's the 4x4 ceiling... *whoosh * (sounds of screaming) there's the floor...* whoosh * there's the ceiling again... They really throw you around! We had a great time though - luckily we shared a vehicle with 3 other people who were total adrenaline junkies and egging the driver on, until we eventually got grounded :rotfl: Fortunately the spare vehicle pulled up within seconds to pull us clear. Think the driver got a telling off though
The desert is amazing - we saw (funnily enough) people still living a bedouin lifestyle with their camels and we stopped to watch the sun set in the middle of nowehere which was incredible. Then we all gathered at the "camp", with bedouin open-sided tents arranged in a big circle, with low tables and cushions, and had a barbeque with belly dancing, and smoking hubbly bubbly. There was also an old lady doing henna tattoos for tips (I know but it has to be done) and if you really wanted to, there were camel rides round the back too.
I know what you mean though - I did have a moment of realisation that the desert really is very, very, very big as we sat out on a dune watching the sun go down, and oh-my-god-what-if-the-driver-just-left-us-now - but of course, he didn't, and there are lots of people at the camp so you feel very safe & secure. They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0 -
Yeah!, what was the deal with the cockroaches in Gran Canaria?, its the ONLY place i have ever been where they were everywhere. Walking down the street, on the beach, in our room...why was that??
We didn't see a single cockroach when we were in GC. Although we've had a fair few holidays I've only ever seen one and that was in Brisbane Au.0 -
Best. Cairo & the whole of the Nile valley
Worst. Zante. Yes I know there are nice parts but, on the whole the drunken brits spoil it. I love Greece & have been to many Greek islands but for me it was just souless.
It's a shame what's happened to Zante. I went in 1980 before it had an airport and it was beautiful. Laganas beach was stunning with hardly any hotels or discos. I haven't been back since but I've seen photo's and heard what it's like now.0 -
Best Places Santorini, Lesbos.Venice, Bahamas
Worst Tenerife (25 years ago, should imagine it's worse now) Portugul (too much concrete for my liking) Corfu , Rhodes, Miami.0 -
Good and bad things can happen anywhere... i enjoyed Florida/Georgia, though travelling long distances by car, and the HEAT!, was a bit mucg after 2 weeks.. most things were great value though, when we went (close to 2 usd to the pound.. oh happy days!)
Crete was very friendly, lovely food, beaches, clear water, though understanding cyrillic ONLY signs/language was bit of a problem, in rural areas. most ;popular resorts hotels etc spoke most languages, so got by ok!
Tunisia was awful. mis-sold 'al inclusive', ended up having to pay for proper meals/drinks.. being there during Ramadan didnt help! also the beach traders were VERY persistant.
Have been to Majorca/Ibiza a few times, though these two places seem to be a bit jaded, last time i went f/x rate also made stuff even more pricey- on top of the peseta to euro markups!
the most relaxing was a driving holiday (someone else did the car work!), around Loire valley, in France- very laid back, simple but good quality food, great weather too. (the less we say about a nightmarish day trip to Paris, the better!)Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Best - Jordan, Middle East, particularly Petra
Worst - Lima, Peru - too scary, felt like I was going to get mugged! Bradford comes a pretty close second, for the same reasons. Sorry to anyone who lives there!0 -
