After reading here i am confused Can someone please clarify for me please...
My Husband was made redundant, i work part time 13 hours, earning just over £100 per week,we he currently claims jsa cb, if we have to claim jsa ib we will be entitled to £94 per week, but as i earn over £100 per week does this mean we will not the mortgage assisitance?
I think thats someone was saying here? Please clarify someone in the know, i am worried sick....
It is definitely worth your while to claim JSA (income Based) and mortgage help. Even if you are over the limit with your earnings (which you should not be as there is a ten pound disregard) then you would still be entitled to JSA once the mortgage was added into the equation.0 -
Patskier,
Caution.
Two points to consider.
1. As stated first ten pounds you earn are not considered(just as a side point if you had two jobs .. it is still only ten pounds NOT twenty). HOWEVER if your total earnings go over your weekly calculated benefit .. NO benefit is paid OR Mortgage help -- FACT
How they calculate it can also cause pain to you .. often they will take your pay slip and divide by 4 .. thus if you had a bumper week money wise you could loose four weeks of benefit. They seem to randomly view the B7 forms, which contain the hours you have done.
2. If you work over twenty four hours in a week, your claim will be closed.
Another little gotcha .. if they don't get the forms and or are lost .... well you can guess. This also has a knock on effect that they can send letters out to your council .... and thus you have to prove it was all a mistake to get council tax help again.
Hope it is clear how the 'system' works so you can avoid any 'traps'
This is a thread that is worth a read .. but note this is the actual Job Seeker, but does show how things are calculated.

Sorry to disagree.I am sure you are giving information in good faith.
However It is only if the total amount of income exceeds, JSA including mortgage help, that there is no entitlement. The calculation is
60.50 for a single person or 94.95 for a couple plus any applicable premiums plus amount towards mortgage less income. It is therefore often worthwhile for someone to claim JSA (Income Based) if there is a mortgage even if they would be nil without the mortgage.
Hope this makes sense?0 -
That does make sense what you are saying ... but I saw than when the income exceeded, let's say the £94.95, the JSA -IB would be zero, therfore no benefit would be payable and thus no Mortgage assistance .. I have this is a FAX(from DWP).
Maybe this is an example of 'wrong' information from the horses mouth(DWP)
At the time I did make the point that I thought this was a crazy way of working, hence why I told my wife NOT to work.
What is your source of information ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam No idea why you removed it as it was something I learnt from this site - bizarre0 -
Sprintblue again thankyou so much for the valuable information:T i will ensure i hand any forms over persoanlly rather than relying on the unrelible postal service.
The calculations are difficult to grasp but i have a better understanding now, thankyou.
Reading here i hope and pray we won't have to claim the JSA IB at all and hubby will find another job, i fear getting blood out of stone would be more succesful than getting anything from the benefits people, what an horrendous, mind boggling, unjust system.
Thankyou also deb0020 but i think to be on the safe side i will take sprintblue and woodbines advise and reduce my hours to get it just under the £94, but thankyou so much for the insight.0 -
Patskier,
The problem with all this is that if you are given wrong information outside the law as written ... there is nothing the DWP can do to say make amends for any error, as they say you can't change the law.
Leaving the Mortgage support to the side for one moment, it is worth considering what you can actually walk away with as extra money.
We know you have to keep under 24hrs per week(as a partner), we were told to do no more than 23.5hrs, just to be safe.
Thus, say you are paid £6.50 per hour x 23.5hrs, this equals £152.75p
The first £10 is not considered, so we are now talking about £142.75p.
If the JSA-IB is £94.95p(I think this has just gone up,new tax year). I don't know what the exact effect this has on your £142.75p.
Whatever it is, I know it is significant..... so if you work out what you have as extra and divide that by the hours you work .... you will be working for a very low hourly rate ... maybe as little as £2 per hour.
If you find what you do as enjoable(my wife was in floods of tears over this) then obviously carry on.

Sprintblue i dont know how many times i have thanked you, but honestly i cant say it enough, you have gone out of your way to try help me understand this system and your insight is invaluable, so again THANKYOU:beer:
Sprintblue i actually HATE my job, but i feel its better to earn something and for us both not to be dependant on the state, being honest reading your last thread i am not sure this is the right way to think at all:mad:
I certainly won't increase my hours in this job, but have been looking for anothet part time job to supplement our income, but reading this last info you so kindly shared i feel that would definately be the wrong move.
I can't help thinking every which way you turn its a catch 22, i get disheartened at the very thought of claiming anything and honestly find it all quite scary.
We wanted to pay our credit card and loan off out of hubbys redundancy for two very good reasons, one we would need less income so we could look for lower paid jobs and two because if we have to sit on benefits indefinately we are not going to be able to pay them once the redundancy money runs out, which is approx another 4-5 months paying our full mortgage, but was told we couldnt do this as we would be seen to deliberately getting rid of the money in order to claim benefits:eek: Err try no deliberately trying not to get the house repossessed is more factual, the benefits rules just dont make sense Sprintblue and i find it very difficult to comprehend their rules, sure i am not the only one, but honestly people like you make things seem not so bad and not so scary, in this case its what you know i think Sprintblue.
Again thankyou:beer::T
P.s i haven't even hit on how terrified i am of having to live and cope on £94.75 per week, i am just hoping this benefit comes complete with a 'how to survive' guide cause i am sure going to need it LOL!0 -
Patskier
I have been reading a lot (and looking of a job
Have a look at this and fill in the question 'do I qualify' Very easy to do.
http://www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/HomeNew.aspx
The upshot of this is that you may be able to optimise all your help financially.
1. If you work less than 24hrs per week, your partner will still receieve JSA-IB
2. If you work MORE THAN 16hrs you will receive both Child Tax credit AND Working Tax credit.
I have assumed you have children.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam No idea why you removed it as it was something I learnt from this site - bizarre0
