Just thought I'd share my experience of buying a Top Spec but cheap as possible 40" LCD TV.

The options I came up with were

Panasonic TX37LZD80, good TV, 1080p, solid all rounder, around £620 is possible.

Sony Bravia 40W4000, excellent TV, 1080p, higher contrast than Panasonic, but you're paying for the name, around £800.

Sony Bravia 40W4500, successor to the 40W4000, won all sorts of awards, 100Hz feature, £900

For me I was in the position where the 37 Panasonic was good, but I wanted something to come close to the Bravia 40W4500.

I found the Samsung LE-40A686, similar spec to the Bravia, advertised on John Lewis for £799 with 5 year warranty.

I found out from AV forums that John Lewis "pricematch" with other retailers in Glasgow. using "Richard Whyte" I was able to get them down to £720 with free delivery.

I'm delighted and will take delivery on Wednesday.
  • 32inch hd ready with freview coming into Aldi on the 12th of March. Not sure about the price but should be around the 350 mark.
  • I guess you're all aware of this deal currently in Sainsburys?

    http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/334279/37-toshiba-37xv553db-full-hd-1080p-/

I've bought one & been impressed so far - using it as the primary display for my PC :D (it's like sitting infront of a video wall!)
Obviously it's a fair bit more than the no-name brands; but cheapest of the big-brand 1080p 37" TVs by a long way.

Personally, I think it's a mistake on the part of Sainsburys - I think they intended to be selling the 37av553 (720p) at this price, not the 37xv553 (1080p).
Not that i'm going to complain =D

Doubt it's a mistake, Argos are doing the 42" version of the XV553/5 for 499 now!!!!

Has anyone bought a 26" RED tv from Sainsburys (selling now at £199)? Is it any good or do you get what you pay for?

Sorry can't help. Was looking for a cheap well-known brand lcd so didn't pay much attention but did notice the price instore at Sainsburys - said it had been reduced by £100.

It was only this morning that I thought that I should consider the RED lcd and am hoping someone might have bought one and can give some details and an opinion.
  • I was in the same predicament about two months ago. I knew I had a bit of bonus coming and thought I ll treat myself to a newTV. After looking around forbargains I came to this conclusion.

Will I have blu ray or Sky HD in the next three years? Yes probably- need 1080P(Full HD)- if you dont save your money and get a decent HD ready.

Secondly what screen size do I need? If you look at where you sit compared to where the TV will sit- divide this distance between these two points by three. This is the rough screen size you need.

Finally what do I want to spend and what can I realistically spend? I had a decent bonus for Xmas and had a budget of £450, ended up spending £560 to get a decent warranty.

I would advise you check out
    Samsung LE-32A457

I ve got one as my second TV and its good quality and cen be had for £300 approx (pricerunner.co.uk)

I would recommend not buying LCD TVs from a supermarket.
Thanks to all who post constructively.
