Cheap LCD TVs discussion

I have a 42" Toshiba Regza which is a 1080i TV and with Sky HD I reckon the picture quality is pretty poor - in fact I think Sky HD isn't worth the money because the picture quality isn't that much better (except for football?).
I have set my Sky HD box to output at 720p because the TV upscales, but changing the output to 1080i doesn't make a lot of difference anyway.
If I buy a true 1080p TV will I get much improvement over a 1080i from Sky HD? Or will it make no difference - I don't want to spend a load of dosh at the minute if Sky HD will be just as bad on the new TV. Advice please. You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -

Or if you fancy full HD 1080p they have it for £349.97:

All get good reevoos.
Thanks for posting that deal. Im looking to buy a 32" tv, but I wont be buying it until around October. Now that Ive seen that deal from Tesco, Im just hoping that they still have that TV at that price then.

biglugs - it depends on the TV. A 1080p TV could produce a crap picture compared to a 1080i - it depends on the quality of the screen inside, and the scaler/software inside. Goto a shop and look at the TVs, some of them should have HD showing on them. If your current TV doesn't look similar, you need to check the setup and possibly calibrate your TV.
First thing I would do is set the Sky box to 1080i. Scaling, as a rule, degrades quality. Sky broadcast HD at 1080i, then you ask your Sky box to downscale to 720, then your TV takes 720 lines and upscales it to 1080. Why not leave it at 1080 the whole way through, then you're displaying every pixel as it was broadcast. Along those lines, make sure you have the aspect ration set correctly (16:9, not zoomed or anything). Are you disappointed with the clarity of the pic or the colour or brightness? I take it you're using an HDMI lead?! Turn any sharpness settings or noise reduction systems on the TV off too. Let us know how it goes, you shouldn't need a new TV!0 -

I ended up buying a panasonic 37lzd80 for £580 (5 year guarantee but unfortunately from empire direct who have since gone bust so the warranty is back to the manufacturers 1 year one) but i bought the panasonic after lengthy research and most importantly walking round many tv shops and looking at them to see the difference, we were drawn to the panasonic in 2 different shops as the picture quality stood out, you could clearly see a difference, well we could at least
here it is at pixmania, i just did a quick search so this is probably not the best price you can get http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/950782/art/panasonic/tx-37lzd80-lcd-television.htmlIf at first you dont succeed.............skydiving is not for you !0 -

Toshiba are currently doing a £100 cashbck off on their XV Rega 100Hz range.
http://www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/Generic-Pages/XV-Cashback-Promotion/
Including cashback, if you buy from Amazon, the 37" is £462 and the 42" is £549.
They seem to get very good USER reviews.
I personally have the Regza 42XV635DB on order (from John Lewis).

Just got a copy of the Netto leaflet for Thurs 1st October.
(not online yet but keep a look on http://www.netto.co.uk )
No idea if this is cheap but 'only 2 per store' makes me assume its not bad, anyway:
'Cello' 15.4" LCD widescreen TV.
Intergrated Freeview.
Intergrated slot-in DVD.
Nicam stereo.
Remote, table stand included.
£119.99.
No idea if this is good as TVs are not my area but just giving you the heads up in case.Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.0 -
