Gone up all over, you do have to act fast when their is a good deal on.
Richer sounds have this one (decent contrast ratio) for £319.95 (£351.90 with 5 year guarantee) - see if JL have it in stock and get it matched at £319.95

Damn, sounds good. I really want to buy, but I want to check out some TV's over the weekend then decide. Sometimes these things are worth the wait... Even if it does cost a bit more...

Success! After weeks of searching and checking this thread etc I have found and bought this:

LG 42" HD Ready LCD TV - overall price : £493.05
    Model: LG42LH2000
    Free home delivery

Twin XD Engine technology; 24p real cinema; Dolby digital plus system

I am so not a fan of Currys (having noted uncompetitive prices in their stores etc) so was suprised to find cheapest price at www.Currys.co.uk catalogue no: 141574. Plenty in stock.

    Here's how:
    On-line Currys price: = £549.00
Promotion code: GET30 (deducts £30 from all on-line orders over £500)
you have to enter this code - not automatic
    = £519.00
    Buy thorough www.topcashback.co.uk - Currys merchant pays 4% cashback - £20.76 = £498.24
Pay using a cashback credit card eg Egg Money 1% cashback - £5.19
    = £493.05

Just got the Toshiba Regza 32AV635D For £325 from Electrical123.
Includes free delivery and there is also 2% cash back through Quidco.
I save so I can spend.
  • If you are skint (and even if you aren't) you need to remember that LCD tellys use more electricity than older CRT tube ones. Also you may be more tempted to become a couch potato and watch it all day rather than going out and earning or saving some money by doing something else.

In a bit of a predicament at the moment any advice?

Want a HD TV to play my PS3 on, after playing it through a CRT for months I want to blow some of my first paycheque on a nice gift to myself.

I have set myself a rigid budget of £350 total price.

I have narrowed it down to these models:

    Samsung LE32B450
    Toshiba Regza 32AV615DB.

The best price I have found for the Samsung is £318 but at £349 including delivery and 5-Year warranty from John Lewis I am inclined to think that is the best deal.

The Toshiba is where it gets complicated. Most high street places (Comet, Tesco, Asda, PC World, Currys) it is £349-399.

Amazon do it for £299, and Richer Sounds for £295 or £318 including 5 year warranty.

I have rung around Tesco, Asda, Currys, Comet and PC World to see if they will match Richer Sounds (as my nearest store is 40 miles, all the others are within 15)... these were my responses:

Tesco + Asda = "We don't price match" (Very, very dissapointed, shoddy service)
PC World = "Yes, we should be able to price match that... ah I'm afraid the product is out of stock at your local store, I don't know when we are getting more in"
Currys = "Unfortunately we can only price match other big chain stores.. [mentioned what PC World guy said as both are part of DSGI Group]... really? he said that? Well I'm afraid we can't, sorry"
Comet = "Yes we can beat that price, provided there is a comet store within 10 miles [defies the whole point of me price matching to save driving an extra 30 miles to Cardiff], went in store and the salesman started slagging off the John Lewis warranty.

So I rang Richer Sounds to get their advice, the guy was very helpful, said the Toshiba is a brand new model and has only been delivered this week. He said they had the Samsungs in for a while.

I asked his professional opinion on the Toshiba and Samsung and he said the vast majority of LCD TV's they sell are Samsung and this in itself says a lot about the quality of the product vis-a-vis the price.

I also mentioned to him how I'd desperately been trying to get the big chains to price match to save me an 80 mile round trip and he laughed and said "We get a lot of that, they can't get close to us".

I am going to Currys tomorrow to view both sets, and have another haggle.

Currently swaying toward the Samsung from JL, any views?

If you're going for the Samsung LE32B450 from John Lewis then get them to price match Richer Sounds - currently £319.95. I did just that 2 weeks ago. The only thing is at that price match you would have to collect the TV yourself from a store. It went into the boot of my golf without any problems.

I went for the Samsung in the end as Toshibas seem to get mixed reviews.

No John Lewis within 60 miles of me, so just went for the online price as they said they couldnt price match online.

i've heard good things about the regza
I have a 42" Toshiba Regza that we bought about 1.5 years ago and paid over £1000 for. I'm very disappointed with it - the screen has what seem to be burn marks on the left side - blurry blackish patches that appear in particular when one colour is displayed - mainly blue or greens.
It isn't the cables or the source - the TV is at fault.
Even though it isn't very old we're going to have to buy another one because the marks drive me mad. And I certainly wouldn't buy a Toshiba again.
You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.
