what the hell are you doing spending £40 on a meal out let al;one over tipping??? Come on, get a grip, ask for your Tip back and an explanation of why the bill was so HIGH in the first plac e..:j:mad:

£40 on a nice meal out is hardly excessive, particularly including drinks!

Personally, I would not include a tip on the machine as it undoubtedly goes to the owner. I'd give a fiver in cash and give it to the waiter/waitress personally

Sorry Mrs Moc, but in my experience, it gets put into a pot and split between a bout a million people (including kitchen and bar staff) so in the end (maybe a Christmas) you see very very little of your share. IF you took it for yourself (even if you did all the work, it is frowned upon, and might even get you into trouble!) Harsh but true!

So, are you saying don't bother tipping in the 1st place?
  • I think this really depends on your own financial situation eg. income as to weather you decide to leave the overpaid amount as a tip? If I was a student I would definately request a refund. But if working as a highly paid lawyer then would maybe leave the mistaken amount on top of the tip.

Also the big difference when paying your bill is when paying by card you don't physically see the money being handed over as you do with cash - so people are less likely to request a refund with a card than they are with straight cash in hand?
if i had known then what i know now

I would NEVER add a tip on the machine. If my waiter/waitress has been good I will give THEM a tip in cash - that way there is at least some chance that the grubby owner won't keep all the cash for themselves and give his waiting staff a "Xmas Bonus" out of the tip pool.

Where i work we keep all our own tips, would not work anywhere that tips are split! We give our bartenders 10% and our SA's 10% but we keep the rest:D

  • Hey I wouldn't ask for it back.

I would tell the waiter/ess that the service was fantastic and thank them for a great meal.

Just imagine how you are going to be welcomed next time you go back !!!!!!!!!!

£10 for a lifetime of future great service and measl sounds like a bargain to me.

How can you not notice what you are paying for?
I never allow tips to be added to my cr card payment - I always leave an appropriate tip in cash for the staff - that way I know that they get it and not the management.
So, I can't imagine this charge slipping by me - but if it did, I would definitely explain that I had hit the wrong keys and paid too much, I would apologise and askt them to please cancel that transaction (i.e. issue an identical one but for credit) and then complete a new, correct one.
I can't see there being any problem. I imagine people often make all kinds of mistakes.

The management refusing to refund? C'mon! There's no difference paying by card than by cash......ever accidentally handed over 2 fivers for an item that costs £3-£4? What did the cashier do, not give you the other fiver back?? Say "sorry, it's your mistake, I'm keeping it" ? Of course not... "Please check the amount and enter your PIN" is polite advice, not a legal statement allowing them to over charge you.

Tip staff directly in cash if you want to, they don't get paid extra for being friendly, helpful or polite.
  • I never tip, never seen the need. Most places the service is mediocre at best.:o

We went to a restaurant a little while ago with family. My fiance paid by card*, whilst chatting to our guests. When we went to leave he left a generous cash tip on the table. The wait staff smiled when they saw it and said "thank you". It was only when I was looking through receipts I saw they had charged him gratuity on his card of £10-£15 already. So we ended up tipping £25 or more for a meal. They said nothing. Thieving greedy *******s

(*I know it was up to him to make sure he checked what they charged him, but they knew a mistake was made and they were more than keen to profit from the error. Not nice)
