  • Hi, I am resurrecting this old thread in the hope of some advice from seasoned `chic shopper/wally trolley` users. I saw a cheap shopping trolley bag reduced on the Lakeland website and it has spiralled into me looking further into them. I have had a read through this thread but need some help selecting the best trolley for me - sadly I don`t live near any shops that sell them to go and look in the flesh. These are my concerns, probably most folks want pretty much the same aside from the height issue...
    1. I am only 5ft tall which seems to be a problem with some trolleys.
    2. I want something that is fairly lightweight yet strong enough to carry heavy shopping or piles of books.
    3. I want the outer fabric to be strong - some cheaper trolleys look like they have quite thin nylon bags on them. Rainproof fabric would be a huge bonus too.
    4. I want 2 wheel style. The 4 wheel ones look too much like a zimmer frame.
    5. I want to be able to hang it from a supermarket shopping trolley.
    6. A safe compartment for purse/keys would mean I don`t have to take my handbag.
    7. Decent capacity, they seem to vary quite a lot from 20 to 50 litres.

Here are some linkies to ones that I like the look of. I would appreciate any comments or feedback you can offer if you have any of these.

Ikea - Is this any good? Strong enough for carrying lots of shopping and suitable for a short person?

    http://www.typhoonhousewares.com/TyphoonSite/category/Shopping%20Trolleys/

Typhoon - Does not say the capacity. Does it hold plenty? I also read one review saying it was flimsy...

    http://www.thetrolleyrevolution.com/rolser-folding-trolleys-9-c.asp

The only Rolser for a short person is the Plegamatic. Love the looks but is it worth the double/triple price tag? How easy is it to fold/unfold? If it really is worth the extra then I would consider it. Rolser owners please convince me...

    http://www.marketeer-london.com/

Marketeer -So many slight variations between the models but I struggle to choose between them tbh. Any comments from owners would be appreciated. These are quite cheap, is the quality any good?

    http://www.barnitts.co.uk/products/2_wheeled.html

On the above link, aside from the Rolsers and Marketeers there some other unkown brands. Long shot but I thought there may be someone here who has one of them. I like the funky £32.99 ones but the Metaltex ones also look good for the money.

Thanks for reading, I hope some of you chic shoppers still follow this thread and will be able to help.

I can only comment on this one because it's what I have. I don't have a car and currently live on the outskirts of a tiny village, about four miles from the nearest town. So everything is dragged home by public transport with a decent walk to/from the bus. I wasn't planning on spending this much, but I am lucky to have a Lakeland in town so could try them out. The others seemed quite small and flimsy to me, especially when comparing side by side with the Rolser.

It is a doddle to unfold, you just unlock the main section and pull the handle up until it all locks into place. Folding initially took me a few minutes to figure out but once I'd found where to push to unlock it, it folds up just as easily. I'm only 5'2" myself and it's a good height for me. My husband (5'11") hasn't tried it yet, but I think he'd be fine with it as well. Can vouch for the weatherproof fabric too, as it has been raining a lot here lately and nothing inside has gotten even a little bit damp.

The first day I used it, I got carried away and lugged home a huge shop - probably a fortnight's worth of food plus a pretty decent pantry (flour, sugar, etc) restock. The trolley was completely full and VERY heavy, but it was more than manageable. With a more normal load, it literally glides along. The paths around here are uneven, so I think this is quite an achievement. It even manages across our gravel drive, which I normally have to carry suitcases across because they get stuck.

It was definitely worth the money. I have the black and white striped one that Lakeland sell, which looks quite modern - I'm 29 and don't get funny looks (only jealous ones!) when using it. My only small gripe is that because the handle is chunky and doubles up when folded, it's not always easy to hang on the back of supermarket trolleys - depends on the size of their hook and how easy it is to access. But I just sit it in the trolley when it won't go on, it folds very flat for its size so takes up barely any room.

    I love my Rolser. :T
  • Love them?
I had a smashing one given to me for Christmas ,its pink and lightweight which is good for me as I use a stick in my other hand to walk with. I don't know where it was bought from but my old onne is now going to the tip as its well past its reusable state.I only paid 50p for it 10 years ago at a boot sale so its paid for its self over and over.I can't wait to try my sparkling new one out tomorrow when I go to Bluewater.

Hi Slinky, I have the Ikea one in pink (slightly different pattern, but same trolley). It is very sturdy, light and easy to use and the fabric is definately waterproof. This is my third trolley and is my absolute favouite - everyone else seems to agree as I think I could sell it on every time I go into town with it!! Definately value for money. By the way, I'm only 5'2".

ETA: I stuff it to the gills every time I use it - books, tins, bulky items - and it has coped brilliantly - it's me who struggles with the weight, not the trolley!!

I'm only 5ft1in so I also found some trolleys were too big for me. In the end I bought this one (I got mine from a local shop):

I love it! It's the perfect height, made of thick canvas with a waterproof lining so very sturdy, there's a zipped pocket on the back and it hangs from a shopping trolley. It's lightweight when empty, it holds loads and would easily cope with shopping, books etc.

One bit of advice with a shooping trolley, remember you have to pull it home!

I have the IKEA one in black and white and it certainly can cope with weight - it did a massive trip from the greengrocers on Christmas Eve. I'm 5'4" and it's fine for me.

I've got an Ikea one (see avatar!) and I love it. I'm 5'10" and it is fine height wise. The other week I rammed it to overflowing with books and records to take to the charity shop, it was so heavy I couldn't lift it down the steps outside my house and had to 'bump' it but it survived intact. I'd definitely recommend it but as it is my first I don't know how it compares.
  • I have a shopping trolley I bought from Lakeland 15 months ago. It's been well used & the bag has now split. Does anyone know where I can just buy a bag for it rather than have to buy the whole shopping trolley? It's been worth it's weight in gold so I really need to get it up & running again ASAP. I did think about making one but I wouldn't know where to start & I know there are times it's cheaper to buy than to make. Money is tight so I'm after the cheapest option but I do genuinley need my trolley so it has to be fixed or replaced.

I don't think 15 months of normal use is very good for a Lakeland product. I suggest you ring Lakeland - they have fabulous customer service for however long you own the product, rather than a timed guarantee.
