Have made some progress towards tomorrow's list...

PF - it's definitely worth putting up door curtains. And thermal lining is even better! I've made both mine slightly too long, so they fold over at the bottom as extra draught excluder. They've got tie-backs to the side for when they're open, so I can loop them up off the floor for cleaning. The only problem I have with mine is that they are too narrow, so I'm going to add borders to the front one (contrasting fabric, as current width was determined by how much was left over from living room curtains) and replace the back one as I need to sort out new curtains for the kitchen this year anyway.

Valli - I'm not sure it can be done. My brother was always losing/lending things when he was younger. He'd frequently go on holiday and come back with someone else's grotty towel/pillow/jumper when he'd been sent with nice stuff! Does he have a job? And rather than you paying for top ups, how about a monthly allowance for EVERYTHING he might need (including clothes) and he has to keep accounts and show them to you each month before you part with the next month's payment? (And make sure the allowance is significantly below what you currently spend on him, as he will start nicking your shampoo/shower gel etc if the alternative is to buy his own!).

kazm - what have you done with all the stuff you found under the stairs?

I would be furious too valli! Too many people now are part of the 'throwaway' generation( god i sound old:rolleyes:), if he has to go without other stuff that he wants so he can save up for a new phone then thats just tough.

Thanks for the support with regards LO, she is not a moany child and i know for her to say she is in pain it must be quite bad as she never lets anything stop her. She puts up with a hell of a lot and i just want to try and make it as easy and painfree as possible for her. Bleurgh, feeling teary now, think its time for bed.

but most of the parents I know had to stay home because the teachers didn't go in to work so the children missed a valuable days teaching.. they should live closer to their place of employment.. same as everyone else.. That would save fuel therefore money and carbon emissions.. noone should be allowed to live further away from their place of employment than 3 miles.. half an hours walk is plenty.. and good exercise!!

I rather snottily told a teacher at school I wished I could afford to live in a little satellite village where the house prices were £300k+ (she was whining about pay/children/driving to work etc.. silly me thought people went into teaching to enlighten children)

I missed a college session tonight due to the snow.. what snow???.. it's almost all gone.. there was only a sprinkling up here anyway..

Not to step on a corn pigpen but at my school snow days aren’t always valuable teaching days.

First they runabout hurling compacted snow (often with stones in) at each other and get all wet and some hurt. Some fall over and get even more wet or hurt. (Not to mention the hard time the [STRIKE]bully magnets [/STRIKE]vulnerable ones have.) Then they come into the classroom late and open the windows so that they can dodge the snow that their friends throw in at them making everything wet and smelly. By the time you get them settled they complain that they are cold and it’s against their human rights to be made to sit in such a cold room and demand rudely that you turn the heating up (like there is such a thing). They then try to hang their smelly socks and shoes on the radiators while huddling around them. Eventually, after every behaviour management trick in the book, you get them to their seats and working someone shout out its snowing and all try to look out the window at the snow like they have lived all their lives on a tropical paradise. Then they start complaining that they should be given the day off to go tobogganing at the rec, where by the way the usual truants are already. Some spend the day stressing over how they are going to get home because they have to walk or imagining that the roads are impassable and they can’t be picked up. Because so many are missing you can’t teach a regular lesson so out come the colouring in sheets, sudukos, and crossnumbers. Ever worse some classes are joined together in the hall for paper aeroplane throwing when the cover teacher’s backs are turned because the regular teachers who rely on public transport cannot get in. By the end of the day the few teachers that make it in are frazzled, the students are still being silly skating and sliding dangerously and the cleaning staff are faced with a mammoth job of making things habitable again and I have to put up with a wet carpet stink for ages how many others have to work under those conditions.

As for living near school. I live HHwalk (my pace) from school and I wish I could afford to live further. Children don’t think I am human so are shocked when they bump into me living a normal life. I can’t go to the local cinema (if I could afford it) for the lack of privacy, or buy stuff at the chemist or have my card declined without it all getting back.

But seriously all it takes is one silly person to cause serious injury or death and schools are full of them. They get even sillier when it snows and can’t be adequately supervised. When conditions are this unsafe shutting schools keep more than its students off the roads and safe.

SSlass reminder teaching is a calling, a vocation. Its all worth it when we make a defference.

BTW I have had my house egged. Since then I have moved and don't tell them where I live. That said, one followed my to find out and another from my tutor group last year is going out with the girl 3 houses up so I have to be careful how to shout at DH.

ETA decluttered over 7 inches of snow today with DS as we made a snowman. Quality time thanks snow day.

The monthly allowance would work for DD but DS is a whole different ballgame. Money 'burns' a hole in his pockets...f'instance just between xmas and new year (when he had LOTS of choc) he went into town and saw a 'buy 2 bars of choc for £2.50 offer - so he did..started both of them (in the car) left them in the car half uneaten and then wouldn't eat them because 'they will have gone off' ...totally lacking in common sense - he did not need the choc and he doesn't have enough money to justify spending like that. he spent £3.50 on 'silly' sweets for that panto...out of a £5 pocket money allowance so if I did give him an allowance like that he would waste it - so up until recently he gets a fiver a week and a monthly £10 top up. I don't spend much on clothes and I just do not think I could stand to watch him blow, say £50 per month, on carp TBH ...
He's well stocked up for deodorant - got about 10 sets for xmas...
and I encourage my family to give him cheques not cash ... for gifts...

  • ooooohvalli I would be livid too. dont know what to suggest but dont buy him another its too easy for him. I know it puts your mind at ease that you can get hold of him but you will just have to set firmer arrangements/curfews etc IMHO until he can afford another - what about a second hand one from one of the independent phone shops - but he has to earn it -could you claim it under your house contents insurance?
    And breath!!!!!!!!

pinkfairy - ooh exciting!!! another puppy!!!!

pink numbers hello and welcome to the twilight zone I mean thread - will pm you shortly!!!

nicki thats cruel at this time of night - I want a cake like that!!!!
kazm wow!!!!! that is some scary cupboard - or was I should say - well done on the re-organising - when's the party - i think i missed that bit!!!!

just been catching up on the news and all the snow that you have had - looks like I will wake up to some more!!!

question do any of you use stardrops to clean rugs/carpets - and if so what sort of mixture? Does it do a good job? its for a large wool rug I have in the lounge and its patterned and the 'cream' bits look decidely grubby - I actually hate the thing but thats another story and I cant afford to dump it for now!

    toots xx

Just so yout know how firm I CAN be - he put the cigarette lighter on the car seat and it melted a circular hole (years ago now) and tried to play the 'look at this - I don't know what's happened card' I did look, closely, and said I bl00dy do ....you've burned it with the cigarette lighter (I had shown them what it was and how hot it got and told them never to touch it...) - boy did I rant and rave...
Upshot of it was he got pocket money stopped for over ayear until the damage was paid for - I got, and had properly fitted, a new seat cover...
No wonder he tells me he wont 'do' anything with GF because it won't be worth the hassle he will get off me and off her mum :rotfl:

Ooh a sudden thought - I have an 'Orange' phone I am not using at the moment. Must go and hide it before 'Careless Hands' remembers it...
(One my Mum bought 'by accident') he is NOT having that either - though I doubt he would want it - not trendy:rolleyes:

(ooh that word shows my age) sorry - not 'sick' :rotfl:

In that case Valli, cut off all funds and tell him to get a job if he wants to buy things... If he genuinely needs anything, he'll have to come and ask you (which would include providing a good explanation as to why he needs it), and either you buy it (when its convenient) or he does and gives you a receipt.

My brother gets cheap, old, second hand phones on ebay for travelling (as he knows he'll lose them). He also buys them for my dad  who is always losing/breaking his (could this be genetic  ). So your DS has a choice... look after lovely shiny new phone or have crap old one
  • Valli - tell him that for every thing he wants to buy, you need a hand-written 100 word essay on why he needs it. And if its not good enough he doesn't get it. :rotfl:

I now have a daily list! It was one of the things on my long list to do, and just spent 10 minutes looking back over threads and putting mine together. It's now written in the front of my 'little pink list book' (yes i'm that forgetful I have a whole notebook for to do lists and shopping lists) and saved on Word. And have written tomorrow's to do list to fit everything around uni. Including buying WM cleaning stuff and glue to fix the broken bathroom door.

    Carol's Shiny New Daily List
    Make Bed
    Eat Breakfast
    Sort washing, WM if needed
    Washing up
    S&S kitchen and bathroom
    Take binbag out if full
    15 minute Declutter
    Air out bathroom
