Steam generator irons

Are these really worth the money? My existing steam iron is not working very well so looking at getting a new one. OH reckons I should get a generator one but I think they are too expensive. He also reckons it would make ironing quicker and easier but as he never irons I don't know why he cares!!!!

I do really hate ironing but do iron most things (not towels, teatowels or underwear) so what do you all think - is it worth the money?

I work as a home ironer and had one of these, didn't really rate it, went back to my conventional iron.

Can't really put my finger on why I didn't like it, for one it took space up on the ironing board which was a pain when you have to iron trousers and can't fit a leg on all the board.

  • I have one, which I bought from Aldi when they had them in on special, think it was about £50.00 I would definatley say they are worth it, I whizz through the ironing now its more than halved the time it takes to iron, godsend.

Spend so far £230!! (Ohhh my days HELP) still got almost 2 weeks left!!
  • I too think they are the "Kippers Nikkers" I wouldn't be without mine, the big bit lives on the chest of drawers and the normal bit lives on the ironing board, but I did need to get a mesh topped board to get the best effect. Well recommended.

  • A retired Jewish tailor many years ago showed me how to press a pair of trousers with an electric iron. He provided his steam with a damp cloth, and immediately afterwards soaked up the dampness (at least I think that is what he was doing) with a piece of wood. Our iron can produce steam under its own steam, but we still use the damp cloth instead. It also means you don't have to worry so much about the iron being too hot for the fabric.

I have got one of these and wouldnt be without it now it wasn't an expensive one, £70 from Argos a couple of years ago. They dropped the price to £50 at one point. They cut through the ironing in no time.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Thanks for all your replies. I am still undecided. The size of them does put me off but it's mainly the price - I just don't feel I can warrant that much money for an iron. I think I'll have a good look around on the internet to see just how cheap I can get one for and then decide.

I adore mine, especially for things that have got a bit overdry and then really creased as it takes a quick run over with my steam genorator and it's fine! I didn't think it'd be that great but I got mine as a present in the end form my mum and dad (my mum had one and knew i'd find it handy!)

I have the big base bit on a sturdy chair next to me if i iron in the living room or on the worktop if in the kitchen x
  • I got the tefal 2950 from argos at xmas it was half price at £115.I didn't open the box for almost a week as i couldnt really justify spending all that money. It is fantastic, i could never go back to an ordinary iron. They are fab. They whizz over jeans in seconds.someones you only need to iron only one side....BRILLIANT
