justamum- thank you so much, i couldnt remember where it was but im just cooking it now and i thank you so much for posting!!! (i open a million pages when on mse so lose place very quickly!!)

I have to admit I haven't actually got round to trying the lemon meringue pie yet - how did yours turn out?
  • it was absolutely beautiful, i added a bit more zest than it asks for as i like bits of lemon floating about, and my flatmate was disgusted at how good (and big!) it was! we are both vegan and havent had a lemon meringue in years. the meringue top doesnt need to be as stiff as they suggest, to work, and i did spend around 20 minutes with the hand whisk (electric thank god!) but it was well worth it. thanks again, a nice cheap recipe too compared to some other desserts

Right, I'm definitely going to give it a go then - I used to love lemon meringue. I'll add lemon zest too because like you I like it really lemony. :D

What type of agar did you use? I would love to make this too!! thanks Sandra
  • Note for those trying quinoa - be sure to rinse it *very* well! It contains saponin aka soapy stuff, so rinse it until there are no more bubbles otherwise you will get a soapy pilaf!

What's a good grain to use for hot cereal that's not oats? I am sadly allergic but I would like to have a hot sweet breakfast sometimes. Apart from brown rice porridge or weetabix with hot milk, what else could I do? Bulgar wheat?
  • murrell- i used dark agave syrup, which i usually get from waitrose or holland and barretts- i can get through it so quick because i loooove it, but sometimes they have it buy one get one half price in h&b which is when i stock up! great instead of honey, i just used some yesterday with fresh ginger for a tea for my sore throat :(

how are you with cous cous? an old slimmingworld tip was cous cous soaked over night then zapped in the microwave in the morning with a sliced banana and some form of sweetner on it served for breakfast - I am not sure why it was soaked over night - maybe to make it more porridge texture, I cant remember but I know it was popular

When I lived in Asia we ate cracked wheat or bulgar wheat for breakfast as oats were not grown locally and were exhorbitantly expensive. Here's a recipe to give you ideas of cooking times, quantities. Like oats you can also soak overnight to speed up the cooking time in the morning. This recipe doesn't use milk but we would use half milk/water.

Update on Mr Nice Guy's lemon meringue pie - we're all tucking into it now and you can't tell the difference between it and the 'normal' sort. It's yummy.
