I'm SO CHUFFED!!! I Love salad cream and just assumed that it all has eggs in ~ but this one doesn't :D

Wish we had Sainsbury's here ... will have to investigate making my own salad cream.

I'd never even thought of washing-up liquid. What makes a WUL non-vegan? Is it that they were tested on animals or is it an ingredient? In any case I think I'll try to source that Clearspring one because it came out well in that ethical scoring site (can't remember link, sorry).

I'll also have to find a vegan eco-friendly affordable dishwasher powder - although I'm experimenting with just using washing soda crystals. It got my dishes clean but they're a bit streaky.

I'm still a wannabe vegan ... with some successes and other areas that need more effort. I'm pleased that I seem to breaking some habits like cows milk and butter - they were some of the hardest for me but it's going better now.

It makes me feel a bit lonely at times cos I don't really have any support for it in real life. I live alone so that's fine but it's when I'm with others that I find it hard. I think my loved ones think it's just a phase (and hey, maybe it is - but whether it is or not, I don't think I've engaged in anything worthier). It's funny how people just have to pick holes in it - when I eat rubbish, nobody questions my nutrition then! It's not just the nutrition - I feel a bit under attack at times. To be fair, I'm an easy target because I'm not a perfect vegan but I have resolved to do my best at all times and not give up trying.

    Rant over - sorry! :o

I wonder if any of you can make vegan food suggestions for me. My dad has a tumor in his throat which is being removed on Tuesday. Once is he home with me I need to feed him easy foods in small portions as his throat will be sore for a long time.
So far I can only think of soup/stew or mash potato with mash veg and gravy for main meals. My mind is just blank.
Puddings are easier as I can give him stewed fruit, custard, ice cream, tapioca/rice pud and possibly pancakes.

Any other suggestions, mainly for savoury.

    Thanks in advance

There is a few about luckily, I think i've tried about 4. I haven't tried this one because I don't eat sweeteners, hope you like it. I use one that I think is granovita and is now stocked by holland and barrett.

Oh Sandra, so sorry to hear about your Dad. I hope all goes well for his op - clearly he'll be in great hands afterwards. :)

Would he be able to eat veg chilli and rice sorts of things or with that be too bitty? If he can manage rice, perhaps risotto? I think the mashed potato and veg sounds great. Not sure if he'd be able for a veggie bubble and squeak type thing?

Not a rant, we all like to help here!
I think it is mainly the animal testing thing, rather than ingredients, but when ecover used to do a vegan washing up liquid, they also did a non vegan one, so I guess others may have animal ingredients also.
I managed to find green force as posted by Thrify Felicity in our wilkinsons and they even do dishwasher tablets, so may be worth checking there if you have one. Janey Lee Grace of imperfectly natural did a article in a health magazine lately and she posted recipe for making your own dishwasher powder. May be worth searching on the net. If you don't find it, I can post it for you.

Glad you are still eager to become vegan, well done for trying. Is there not a local group you could join or a local mentor. Might be worth contacting the vegan society so they can put you in touch with other vegans in your area.I don't know if vegan buddies is Bristol only, but it might be worth contacting them also.

Edit: I've just had a look on the vegan site, there doens't seem to be a group near you. Well at least not one they know about.

    Bye for now

Thanks for the ideas. They are all possibly doable. I will add them to my list. He also loves vegan shepherds pie, so that will be a winner. Will just have to see what hes like. I am going to get some V8 juice, so at least he should be able to get his nutrients as he won't be eating enought calories otherwise. Will go with smoothies too for liquid nutrients.

EDIT: I see we are replying to each other at the same time!
    Thanks again

Thanks Sandra - I just needed to get that off my chest! Those are great suggestions. We do have an active vegetarian group with some vegans I think but I am waiting till they have a frugal meetup as I can't afford to go on the restaurant outings. That veganbuddy groups sounds great, will look into it. Will check out the dishwashing info too.

Re your Dad - had another idea - also involving rice so it mightn't suit. I went on a Zen retreat once and every morning we had this delicious vegetable and brown rice "porridge" called genmai - flavoured with miso I think and soy sauce, sesame and that sort of thing. It was so nutritious and easily digested too. Everything was chopped up into teeny tiny bits and it was quite liquidy so I think it would be easily swallowed. Hmmm, must make it myself some day.

Thanks will look into that. It has reminded me that I have made a rice porridge for breakfast before. May come in handy. He will be having oats for breakfast as usual, so at least thats one meal I don't have to think about.

Have you suggested any non restaurant meet ups to the group. Our groups has picnics, walks and potlucks in peoples home where all food has to be vegan. I am sure there will be other members that would like a cheaper get together. When our group meets up in wetherspoons most of us don't eat despite there being vegan options and there soda water is free! This week we met in a tea rooms and the tea room is now going to provide vegan options as they realised that if there had been food, they might of got 14 orders! Especially as we sat there and chatted for 3 hours!

I really should suggest it Sandra but because I haven't met them yet I don't want to be pushy. They do seem to have all sorts of meetups though - there just hasn't been the right thing at the right time so far ... but there will be soon I'm sure!
