I know what you mean. Not keen on visiting somewhere so meat heavy really, but if you are caught out, like you say, it's handy to knowMy little ones aren't at the age of peer pressure yet, but when they are it will be good to know there are some options out there

I had a bit of red cabbage mountain to use up and found this yummy recipe from Fat Free Vegan (sounds like a website I need!)
It seems like a great vegan site in general.
I wasn't sure what red pepper was so I used some cayenne and it tasted great. And I used more seeds/spices just cos I really like them! It lasted for a few meals (as there's just me). I threw a handful sunflower seeds into the pan for the lsat portion that I heated up today and they were really nice in it too.
Red Cabbage and Peas with Cumin and Mustard Seeds
1/2 large head red cabbage (about 6 cups shredded)
canola oil spray
1 teaspoon cumin seed
1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon asafetida (optional--or use 1 tsp. minced garlic)
1 1/2 cups frozen green peas
1/8 teaspoon red pepper (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon water
quick squeeze of lemon juice
Core the cabbage and slice it very thin. Heat a deep skillet or wok. Once it's hot, spray it lightly with canola oil and sprinkle the cumin and mustard seeds across its surface. Toast them for about 1 minute and add the asafetida. Add the peas and stir well, scraping the spices up from the bottom. Add the cabbage and sprinkle it with the red pepper and salt and stir well. Add 1 tablespoon of water and quickly cover. Reduce heat to low and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes. It's done when the cabbage is to the tenderness you like. Squeeze a little lemon juice over the top, stir, and serve.

Hello!
I've been thinking about a vegan diet for a while and have just started to eat this way. I am amazed at the wierd placed you find milk products... for example, yesterday I opened a can of ratatouille, thinking that it would just be vegetables, but when I looked at the label there were 'milk products' listed. Also, I picked up a tub of guacamole in the shop yesterday without even thinking about it, because everybody knows that it's just avocados, tomatoes and chilli, right? Nooooo, this is made with double cream!!!! How ridiculous?!!!
Anyway, I've now learnt the lesson that you have to look at the label on everything, even if it's the last thing that you would think to have milk in.
Great thread btw, I'm looking forward to trying out some of the recipes!Say what you mean.. mean what you say... without being mean.0 -

I've seen milk products in pickled cabbage! About as bizarre as in ratatouille. Also some crisps have milk products, in flavours you wouldn't expect, like salt and vinegar, or salt and black pepper.
It's difficult to find guacamole that doesn't have milk products, best to just make your own
A heads-up to anyone that shops at Tesco... all of their own-brand fresh bakery products, including the baguettes and organic bread, have dairy ingredients in them. Morrisons and Asda can't tell you what's in theirs as they have no ingredient sheets, but Sainsbury's do have ingredient sheets (just ask at the bakery counter) and their bagels and organic bread are vegan. :TR.I.P. Bart. The best cat there ever was. :sad:0 -
I'll definately make my own guacamole from now on, and eat it with a bagel from Sainsbury's!
Has anyone read Alicia Silverstone's book The Kind Diet? I was thinking of buying it as I could do with losing some weight and it looks good for inspiration, but would like a personal recommendation before I buy!Say what you mean.. mean what you say... without being mean.0 -

Well done for starting to become vegan, it will get easier.
Further to the good info provided for Felicity.
I knew someone thats works at morrisons last year and she checked for me. They do have dairy in all there bread. However they do some part baked organic baguettes that are vegan. They are called 4 part baked malted bread rolls. We really like these and use them a lot. I think there might be a white version also. The barcode is 5 010251 259077 if you want to check if your store has them. I have seen these in another store to, I think it was asda, so I am guessing the same company makes them for different shops.
Asda publish a pdf document listing there products
http://your.asda.com/2009/9/9/where-can-i-get-list-of-asda-food-products-suitable-for-vegans
Also the vegan society have a handy animal free shopper guide and a more uptodate online checker for products, so great for checking the supermarkets. http://www.vegansociety.com/afssearch.aspx
Also some tomato ketchups have milk in them!! Companies are probably paid to get rid of the byproduct, so stick it in anything they can!
If you need any further help or support, just ask.

Hi folks,
Could anybody point me at a vegan recipe for banana and nut loaf? I know I've seen one here on OS but it's not in the index (or at least I couldn't find it). Preferably not using anything fancy to replace eggs ... I've a feeling that I made it without eggs before when I'd run out and extra banana held it all together. Also, I'm used to having it with lashings of butter so any suggestions tfor alternatives would be great.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

There's this one here (scroll down to third recipe).
It does use flax seeds so not sure if that's to fancy but i've been thinking that it comes out so firm from the bananas (they will set a cake instead of egg in many cases) that it probably doesn't need them.
OH thinks this one is yummy.0 -
Thanks Twinkle_Star :T It sounds scrummy. I still haven't got myself something to grind my flax seeds so I'm wondering if I might manage without. I guess there's only one way to find out!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
