For those putting their tree on ancestry.com or Genesreunited - I would recommend getting a free piece of software and storing if offline and then you can import a cut down version to ancestry or GR.

Hi, I've been lurking for ages and decided to take the plunge and join you all :)

Well I have dithered long enough and have now taken the plunge lol I used my existing UK log in and it worked perfectly! Thanks OP I can now get my genealogy fix again!

Would you mind explaining how you did this please? Did you use your existing Ancestry username and password when you took up the offer?

Sorry if I'm being a bit dense, but my subscription is up renewal in March and it would obviously be cheaper to take this offer even though it is a few weeks early. I assume it would mean I'd be able to keep all the things I've saved in My Shoebox etc ?

    Thanks
  • Personally I couldn't find a way to use my existing Ancestry details and had to register a totally new account, thus losing everything I'd previously saved etc.

I went onto ancestry.com.au and logged in with my ancestry.co.uk name and password then clicked on the offer and no problem!
  • agree that genes reunited rocks when it comes to displaying the tree (and its free unless you want to contact others or lookup records, and even then its not expensive). ancestry is great as it has lots of records included in the price so works out more cost effective for researching. personally i subscribe to both, tho may drop ancestry soon

the 1911 uk census can be found only at https://www.1911census.co.uk and the ireland (1911/1901) census is totally free (yep, f-r-e-e) at https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie (although only a few counties are available at the moment, the rest should be online shortly)

the other must-haves are freebmd.rootsweb.com for free births/marriages/deaths (and there is a cool trick to finding out spouses maiden names from there as well) and the LDS search tool at https://www.familysearch.org

pretty much all web sites and software allow trees to be exported/saved/imported via GED files, i keep my master on Genes Reunited and occassionally update the working copy on ancestry

and yes, it is VERY addictive, have been to dublin on ryanair penny flights a few times to go thro BMD at the General Registry Office there, and last month made a trip to a long-lost farm that my grandfather was born in, and the 1800's stone building (two rooms containing 8 people and two families) was only still there! its a bar now, and the current owners were very friendly - so go have fun

edit: for ireland you may also find https://www.irish-roots.ie of use, tho not cheap, and there are odd sites around, like for essex try seax.essexcc.gov.uk

I just tried this on the worldwide account and it came up on the payment page as AUD $517.44 so please be careful!

Using the offer adding taxes makes it up to 172.48 AUD (76.47 GBP)

I did that, but emailed them and they were really helpful - set up a new password, so I can now link again thro my software. Working brilliantly now! I'm really happy - thank you again OP!

Hi justevi, has it let you use your family tree that you'd previously done on the UK site ? My memebership runs out next week and ancestry are going to take the renewal cost from my credit card unless I close my account. So if I tell them I don't want to renew and go for this offer, will I still be able to access my family tree ?
    Thanks.
