I cant answer your questions re ancestry.com Au but if you are planning starting your family tree be warned.....its very addictive LOL
I would also register with genesreunited (no need to pay if you dont want to be a full member) I find it invaluable for keeping track of my tree. You can always pay your sub (about £10 a year) later when you have got yourself sorted and then you can contact other members who may be researching the same line as you.

I took out the UK heritage package - this seems to give me the same access I had before, including pre 1387 parish records (transcripts not original copies) - I've never had the worldwide option, so I don't know whether this offers any more in the way of UK parish records?
I currently have the UK annual subscription which I think is the Essentials option now. I was going to upgrade, when I renew in a couple of weeks time, to the Premium package which includes the pre 1837 parish records.

Being naturally cautious [I drive my family round the bend :) ] I just wanted to make sure, before I took the Australian offer, that I wasn't losing anything that I have access to now and that the parish records would be available.

Thanks very much for your help, I really appreciate it.
I was just about to take out the basic UK package and have my first attempt at tracing my family tree. When I saw this thread I was so excited.

You will have a great time tracing your ancestors - as justevi says, its totally addictive!

I am now thinking about the Worldwide option BUT last night I had a bit of a play on the .UK site and set up a basic family tree. I did not subscribe though. I assume that this will still be there as an account though, waiting for me to subscribe. Am I likely to run into problems if I start again and subscribe to the .AU site.
Not sure how you ensure you set up with this account- you will have to play around. I didn't and ended up opening a new account, but i am now accessing it thro' .co.uk, so I'm sure I could have activated my old UK account via.com.au.

For those who have already subscribed .... when it brings up possible relevant links, will all the foreign ones appear first?
No, you can tick the option that says 'only records from the UK and Ireland'.

have fun!!

Weigh up the options before you decide, do you need the worldwide option? Pointless paying double for worldwide if you are not going to use it.

Not many records from here (or none that have been relevant to my Irish ancestors), but It has some records, including the index to the Griffiths valuation. It does not have indexes to bmds from the North either.

don't forget that the 1881 census is free to access on that site...but they don't advertise the fact.
• I use familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp for quite a bit of my research its free
• What the f*** are you supposed to put in the "description" box next to date of birth? ..."messy", "lots of blood"...???
