We still have one of these. It's like going back in a timewarp. The shelves are still the metal racks. It has one of the best butcher counters in town - and you can buy mishapen mucky carrots that taste of real carrots - and turnips that aren't pre-packed.0 -
Stead and Simpson are still very much going strong... their head office is literally 2 minutes away from FIL and step-MIL's house in Leicester.
I remember when Newcastle got a Primark... late 90's??? Everyone was fascinated as they had never heard of or seen one before.... didnt realise they had been going that long!! I went to the old Primark in Derby when I first moved to Notts (2005) and until recently I had a top from there.... 4 years it lasted!! Lol.
Beatties was cool - I seem to recall the one in Newcastle was in Eldon Square and I think my brother worked there at one stage - we used to go in and harrass him!!!! Jeanster in Eldon Square as well... I got my first mobile phone from there as I seem to recall you got a free pair of jeans with it!!! My bro worked there as well for ages, he usually used to be standing near the door so me and my gaggle of schoolmates or me and my ex used to walk past and pull stupid faces at him or say stupid stuff to wind him up!!!!!! God how mature I was lol.
There was a kwik save up until about a few months ago near my mums house..
And I know they are still about but internacionale.... I used to love going in there and buying cheap jewellery and hair bobbles... what a thing I had about hair bobbles!!! Lol. Oh my god, this is such a fabulous thread... its bringing back so many memories for me!!!

Our local Stead and Simpson is having a closing down sale. I'm quite surprised as it's the only fashion shoe shop in town. All the others are independently owned, and sell brands like Clarks.0

My local Stead and simpsons are having a 'central warehouse closing down sale' now theres hardly anything for sale though and nothing in the window display. I think that they are actually going the same way as woolies? Anyone know anything?0

What a trip down Memory Lane this thread is. Thanks everybody! A shoe shop I remember from childhood is Kettering and Leicester - we always got our wellies there. One of my favourite shops was Kippax (was it nationwide?) they sold biscuits, weighed into bags straight from the tins. My favourites were Symbol Revs - a dark chocolate biscuit with a hole in the middle."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

I remember 'Our Price' always seemed to be more expensive than everyone else so I always used to call them 'Their Price'.
Anyway can I put forward 'Freezerite' which was like a 70's version of Iceland but without Kerry Katona (probably because she hadn't been born at the time). The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
And I look like a tramp and tramps like us

I used to love Sailsburys for my handbags.
I can remember getting very excited when Dayvilles came to town with all the different flavours ice creams (was it 49 flavours?) all very American and new!
Also Hamells for my clothes (I still have a jumper I bought there in the 80's!)0 -
We used to have a shop called The Wool shop which sold almost exclusively wool, I used to go with my mam and gran every fortnight and twice a year I picked which one I wanted for a "cardy" but NOT the mohair ones - too expensive. I think you would struggle to find a few balls in a department store nowadays.AKA: PC

Most villages and local shopping precincts had a Wendy Wool shop. They'd save all the wool you needed for a cardi so they'd be the same dye-lot, and you could go and buy a ball every week or as you needed. They also sold vests, socks and lovely baby clothes which local ladies (usually old dears) would knit and the shop would provide the wool and pay a small amount for their labour.0
