don't remember Mac Fisheries? Etam that reminds me of my first Bra from Tammy girl (28AA).
Got my first mobile from The People's phoneshop
and my first BF who was really "trendy" shopped at Concept Man

I remember macfisheries but I think it was in the late 60's - my mam worked in there. Wasnt it just a northern firm??? Great name

    Geordie Jeans! :T

Everyone from the north-east who was a teenager in the 80's must have owned at least one pair of Geordie Jeans. Every time a new craze came out, pinstriped, stripe down the side, coloured turn-ups etc. we'd be there buying a new pair.

Also Robert Anthony for cheap jewellery, me & my friends would be in there every Saturday buying something with our pocket money, you could get a silver chain for a couple of pounds. I think my very first digital watch came from there!

yes -geordie jeans - great shop bought loads. Also Robert Anthonys I got my ears pierced there, very cheap jewellery shop.

Also Chelsea Girl - the shop was very dark and dingy and those changing rooms (but I couldnt fit into much stuff from there - the largest size they did was a very small 14). That was my aim to buy a skirt from Chelsea Girl when I was losing weight - I did achieve this but the next month found out I was pregnant!! so never wore it again.

    Memory lane

I forgot about Galls. Maybe that was just a Scottish chain? Used to sell ladies clothing and if I remember correctly, it also sold wool.

Galls - oh another name from the past! The more I think about this though the biggest presence on the High Street in the 70's around my area was the Co-op. They had umpteen stores in each town, there would be the bakery, butchers, fruit shop, furniture, menswear, ladieswear etc etc and in most cases the all seemed to be housed in separate buildings. Some towns were decimated when the Co-op shut down. And I think people saved co-op stamps (my memory is hazy there but I do remember licking and sticking stamps on a cardboard booklet type thing for granny)

Wimpy is definately still going, as there are quite a few round london *roman rd/ lewisham are 2 I can remember- plus a couple Ive been unfortunate to eat in at services ( norton canes??) they are a franchise.

Also another one that has bit the dust- was it national - Toy & Hobby?

Select Seconds ( bolton I particularly remember)

    :)

My aunty was good friends with Helen who owned toy and hobby, and my mum used to clean her house! We got great Christmas presents as kids with our Sindy wall of sound being a particular favourite! She stopped trading in the late 80's/ early 90's I think, and went off to live somewhere exotic! I think it was mostly a Northern chain, but she would never have a shop in Liverpool town centre as she said the rates were too expensive.

We still have a Wimpy in Liverpool, and we used to have a Leo's supermarket, it became Pioneer and then the co-op

We also have a Beefeater, it's part of the Travel Inn brand.

    What a great thread!!!
