Well for the fact my best friend works for DirectLine as a damage assesor... so yeh I know how much things cost. My car when I bought it had a dent in door and no side wing, he repaired this for £100. I also got told that a garage would have done it for about £500 (needed paint job + hammering out the dents).

And yes I know it was my fault. He was in my blind spot and there was someone in the back (I can't see through peoples heads). I have fully accepted liability, no doubt about it, and I was willing to pay for repairs... but I'm not out to get robbed. Its not like I am saying I wrecked his car and don't want to pay for it.

And I can't protect my NCs. My policy doesn't allow me to.

What a repair costs the insurance company can and is a lot different than the cost to a private individual.

Accidents happen and unfortunately they cost. You either pay what is costs to him or go through your insurance company.

Its a choice you made to go with an insurance company that doesn't offer NCB protection so unfortunately you will suffer the loss of NCB and a rise in next years premium.

Cheaper insurance is not always cost effective in the event of an accident.

They do. Its me that can't get them. They wouldn't allow it, I think its because I'm young

Yeh its just I was willing to pay it, the guy seemed nice enough, we sorted it out there and then, then gets his boss to phone me and says it will be £1500 when the chances are its not.

I hope the farming industry goes to **** and his company becomes bankrupt and he loses his job tbh.

Been told I currently get a 40% discount for NCB, which I lose in a year (I renewed 2 weeks ago!!!). So £445 at the moment, going upto around £800/£900 !!!!!!.
At least you have plenty of time to save up. :j

lol I did think about that. I can budget for it at least. Was quite lucky, I renewed on the 14th!

The guy did say my current was based on 40% discount. So should be about £800-£900 without it, but I imagine it won't be that high because I would have +1 year on insurance, and I will be 21.

The premium might also be loaded because of a claim, although if you'll be 21 and you have comprehensive cover you could always take a voluntary excess.

Ok, so on Friday I reversed 5 yards and a car was behind me. I scratched his front bumper and bent his side wing. I asked to not go through insurance because the damage is repairable for a few hundred £'s.

He phoned me today claiming it will cost £1500 to repair, there is no way there is £1500 damage to the car.

To compare, there is nothing to my car. (not even scratches)

It looks as though I will be going through insurance now but it there anyway I can get an independant assesor to look at it rather than take his word?

Ask him to send you a written copy of the quote he has recieved before proceeding with an insurance claim, see what he says then.

Really, if that's your attitude I hope he takes you for every penny. Hardly nice to wish misfortune on his colleauges and employers or even to him after you failed to insure you had full visability before reversing is it?

Don't mean to be funny but if it was me and it was my car you had bumped and it wasn't my fault... I'd be going to my dealership and I can bet you it wouldn't be cheap... Incidently I have a VW not unlike the one in the picture and if you damage the bumper on them then it's a new bumper... why? Because they are filled with parking sensors and other fun stuff as well as being just a bumper. Then you have the dent... and I wouldn't settle for adent being "hammered out" either... I'd want the panel replacing and then a GOOD paint shop to do the paint job.

And ironically we HAVE been on the other side of the coin - DH drove into the back of a car once (not entirely his fault but as far as claim wise would have been concerned we always knew we'd be liable) and we decided to pay without involving insurance. However we asked them to get 2 quotes and then we'd deal direct with the garages to get the work done and pay them directly :) Cost us about £800 (flaming plastic bumpers grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) all said and done but such is life and we all live and learn - DH now has protected NCB like me ;)

You do realise you have to notify your insurance company of all accidents whether you are making a claim or not?
