    The general message was
Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number.

The other errors related to the fact I had to close down by holding the on button on because it had froze.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • Kerberos is the source of your problem. Try re-installing it, though I have to admit I fail to see the need for it on a home network unless you work for the Government at home, and need some added security, (saying that the government wouldn't know what security was if it jumped up, bit them in the derriere and then kicked them)

IS this being used on a server?
  • Just had another search on this one. Ignore the above. Can you try this, try removing your RAM sticks, giving them a quick clean and then re-install them. Then reboot

Have you done any hardware chages recently?

No RRE, I have not upgraded any hardware, I was having horrendous hdd knocking noises, so after trying all the fixes on here, ended up removing the data and rebuilding it. that was about two weeks ago and it has been a lot better the network was fine, until yesterday. It is a year old Medion and is still under warranty. I keep getting boot disk errors which Medion TS suggested it could be if I had a USB HDD connected on start up, which I had, so sorted that and it was Ok from Mon-today when I got the boot disk errors again, and now the freezing. The HDD is still noisy so may need to report that back to them again now, especially with the boot disk error. It is very intermittant, sometimes happens, sometimes doesn't, sometimes switched off and then switched on a few seconds later fixes, other times it doesn't.
About ready to pull my hair out, but dont think being bald would suit me.

  • What boot disk errors precisely are you getting?

It does not find the boot disk and asks for a system disk to be inserted.

  • Your initial statement about hdd knocking noises is a little concerning, as it may be dying but....have you tried a bootrec?

See M$KB 92739 on how to do this

Ok done that and it now appears to boot OK, but still freezes, not much to describe the mouse appears to work (it moves), but nothing responds to the clicking, and no response to the keyboard either.

  • This is extreme, but if the mouse moves, can you try this the next time it happens

Go to Start | Control Panel
Go to Ease of Access Center
    Click Start On screen keyboard

    Click Start
Now type in Taskmgr using the onscreen keyboard, in the Start Search
Click on the Processes tab and see if anything is using an inordinate amount of CPU time

Just found another error in event log - which related to some icons in Yahoo, ad I had noticed that Yahoo toolbar had managed to be installed, not intentionally by me, so I have uninstalled it, waiting to see what happens next. Usually it will not allow the mouse to open start, just move around the screen.
