Wish I could just pop over the Pennines and come and fix it for you. Rather difficult remotely.

Check the version of the router firmware and update from here if not running the latest.

I know its not easy HH, and I am not a complete novice, but never seen anything this weird before. Can you tell me how to delete the network connections so I can start again, and if necessary I will reset the nearly new router back to factory settings and start again from scratch.

As it happens I was just about to copy all the data from the laptop to the desktop so I can rebuild the laptop back to where it started before I go away with it, as all pc's its got rather cluttered.

So I think in the circusmstance I just carry on backing up and the re-build unless anyone comes along with a miracle.

    Many thanks for your help.

n.b. Ir is the last but one version of firmware, but the last time I played with firmware it ended up buying this router, so sorry but I decline that suggestion.

Also check on the router that nothing has changed.

    Assuming the screen layout is the same as my Netgear DG834G;
click on LAN IP Setup and check that "Use Router as DHCP Server" is ticked and the starting ip address is 192.168.0.2

Only options I can now suggest.

    1) rebuild laptop (as you already suggested)
    2) Use router and use Address Reservation for your laptop(effectively hardwiring an ip address to your laptop & avoiding ip address conflicts):j
  • Before you do anything try repairing the tcp/ip stack

    For Vista

    Click on Start button.
Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request.
Type netsh int ip reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
    Restart the computer.

However, we still have the rest of the problems.

  • Most TCP/IP stack corruptions are as the result of malware/spyware/scumware, whatever you want to call it.

Do an antivirus scan, spybot scan and a spyware blaster scan. If necessary, go to one of the specialist spyware removal sites and get help if you come across any nasties you can't get rid of

I am doubtful as I dont surf much out of here tbh. I cannot get onto the internet to update Malwarebytes but it was updated and run on the 15th Jan, so am runing it with that. I have AVG running and was updated up to today, so will run tht when Malwarebytes has finished.
