It always saddens me when people say 'I can't afford to eat free-range'. I'm single and on disability benefits (which means I have nobody to split utility bills etc with) and I can't afford many luxuries (no tv) but I only eat free-range eggs and chicken. I can only afford to eat it once in a blue moon but when I do I appreciate it all the more. The truth is that with a little creative thinking everyone CAN afford to eat free-range.

bernard matthews - yuk . Haven't bought his food for along time . I've swapped to free range but to tell the truth No one in my family can taste any difference . Anyway, we all have to manage as best we can and im sure a lot more ppl will be eating non free range with redundancies . If you can afford the more expensive meat then you have a real choice, but many ppl dont . I just wish some ppl wouldn't be so snobby because in the end it is those who have further to fall .

For many people free range is a luxury that they simply can’t afford with often a negligible difference in quality (especially if used in a curry or something). Quality or cruelty seem the main arguments, but I wonder how many of the “free range only” crowd eat chicken from a take away or a restaurant, as 90% of these will just use a normal battery chicken. For that matter most food you probably eat probably came from battery hen (mayonnaise, cakes, mousse etc)
There seem to be a lot of people who buy free range so that they can believe they don’t contribute to cruelty but it is quite hypocritical when they are quite happy to buy a product made with eggs.
What it comes down to is good chicken at a good price (bought some today myself). Which if welcome as it is usually only the really processed food that is discounted that much.
As a side note also noticed the mince (not smart price) was reduced to 75p
  • Just want to say don't buy the mince at 75p we tried it o m g
It was awful, like chewing on bones so won't be buying again
We can't afford chicken normally so will be getting some of this
Everytime I see a thread about chicken or eggs I cringe cos I know what's going to happen, what's the point?
Just don't post if you don't agree
Like it's been said before not everyone can afford organic/free range especially in these awful times we find ourselves in
If we can afford it I do buy free range eggs like at the moment they are on offer at asda for £2 for 15 I think,if not it's the caged eggs so all depends on your personal budget

if i could afford to buy better cuts of meat i would

but it's dog eats dog in this world, and my family come way before a chicken in a coup

and if me buying this means that i can save money and put it towards the heating bill, to give us a bit more heat in this cold time, then i will

putting a picture of a sad looking chicken won't make me not buy it..

And i will sleep very well at night, with a full tummy of to get some now

Oh and i do have to say that £1mince was rank..............never again

I don' think being on a budget is an excuse to buy cheap meat - there a plenty better ways to get protein than that. I'd rather eat less good meat and add veg and pulses than £1 chicken. In case your wondering - my shopping budget was £30 for 4 for this week, inc packed lunches and a decent chicken from the butcher that will do 2 meals plus soup!
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

  • If people are concerned about cheap low quality meat especially mince why not try the soy mince from Tesco 500g £1.19 (might be wrong on price but noy by much).
I mix it with Tesco stock cubes 10p chicken or 29p beef tastes good in most things( ok its not meat texture or full taste!).

Oh and I do eat meat not always the cheapest but whatever meets my needs or is on offer at the time:D !!

Bloomin heck your rich, i have a family of four and a dog but i still have to budget on £50 a fortnight! Try that on free range lol

I feed a family of 5 on £50 per week and manage to buy free range/and or RSPCA Monitored chicken and eggs. I would rather go for quality meat than quantity.

If you can't afford free range, then why not try the RSPCA monitored ones and cheaper cuts of meat eg, Chicken thighs
