  • I never have a problem with them but I don't use them on principle. If they offered me a discount (after all, they are saving money on staff) then I would use them more regularly.

Me too. Staff costs are factored into the store prices so I refuse to use self service and increase the store's profits.

I always use them, and pretty much always come across problems with them too. :rotfl: Normally the problems are the same as all of the above. Most recently though I scanned the thing and put it in and then it insisted for me to put it in the bags. Clicked "skip bagging" to save the wait then as soon as I'd done that there was miraculously an unexpected item there. So took it back out, now left holding some butter with it being classed as scanned but not bagged. Same kinda thing kept happening and took bloody ages to finish, and then the payment processing was suddenly intrrupted by "Unexpected item in bagging area" interrupted by "Notes are dispensed below the scanner". At this point I didn't know what the hell was going on, then the screen blanked and the Windows loading logo came on the screen. I was confused, had I payed?

I am quite capable of using them, but I prefer to keep someone in a job and I can get through the till quicker with a cashier scanning and me organising my shopping into bags in a way that makes it quick for me to unpack at home.

I'm peeved because tonight I called in at local Tesco superstore at 11pm on my home from work for some stuff I need. There were no cashiers on duty, apparently when the last one signs off in the evening, it's only the self-serve option. After 8 hours on my feet, serving my own customers at work, I then had to serve myself in Tesco.

And I'm tired and therefore extremely p*ssed off about it. And once again now, I vow not to go back, because of the disdain with which Tesco treat their customers. If only it weren't so damn conveniently located!
  • I occasionally have problems if there is something very light, the scales don't seem to be able to work it out. Things like bakery products which don't appear in the list can be a bit annoying, but generally would choose to use them rather than queue at a checkout.

Personally I prefer self-service wherever possible as I like to scan and pack at my own pace, and they are also handy for getting rid of a pile of loose change.

as long as you are thick skinned enough to avoid the dagger looks from people in the queue :o:D

I get rid of change in them too :o
Here I go again on my own....
  • i did laugh at this thread, i never have a problem with these checkouts and i think they are good when you are in a hurry

Morrison's self service checkouts are great. You can scan at twice the speed the checkout operators move at, and if you want to use your own bag you can push the scales back... something Tesco just does not understand is feasible!

I like the ones in Morrisons too. They have a little conveyor belt thingy on top which you can just drop all your loose change into without having to insert every coin one at a time like you do in most others. It counts what you have dropped in and spits out your change.
  • I'm not a fan of the whole self service thing. I'm if I wanted to serve myself I would go to a checkout online. The 'Unexpected Item...' is definitely the most annoying of all, and now my university library is trying to force student to use the self service issuing station and not go to any of the helpful librarian. And guess what? it came up with an error.

Not really increasing the store's profits,as even the very basic models cost in excess of £3,000 to buy, then you have to have the MOS on every set of 4 tills (usually), and when the tills are down, they can't take any money at all. If anything, in the initial period of having the systems in, the store is making a loss.

hate the self serve tills - i always seem to have age- restricted items or reduced items or security protected items and it never ever goes smoothly even if i only have one item???
thank the lord i do my main shop at Aldi where you get processed through the tills in nanoseconds - you dont have time to bag your stuff - you can then bag at your leisure at the counter and check the reciept at the same time (and i have never had to go back to checkout and complain something went through twice or wasnt reduced.
so may i say - Aldi - dont ever introduce self serve they arent half as efficient as your lovely friendly staff.
