"Self-Service" Checkout machines in Tesco

I use them at Tescos when I can because I like to pack items at a rate I can handle as otherwise I leave the till point and have to find a space to re-pack everything that had previously been shoved at me or worse- badly packed for me. (Frozen items in three bags instead of just the one).
I also like the way I can say I have used 4 of my own carrier bags instead of the sales assistant seeing my 4 reused bags and telling the till that I have only reused one. As they say, every little helps.
They can be frustrating (the message that there is an "unknown item" in my bag) is what annoys me the most. But get an MP3 player, and turn it up, the voices no longer speak to me! I use this dead time to ensure my bags are properly packed before yelling (as I have earphones on and cannot tell how loud I am talking) "I THINK THE MACHINE HAS BROKEN". Someone comes to fix it pretty soon after.
agree with this. I don't have scanning targets to reach, so I can move at my own pace, which tends to be more efficient as I'm not trying to pack under a growing pile of whizzing tins. On the whole, there is less waiting around as the mammoth trolleys can't go through, and they are always well staffed. And ensure I get my green points.
Can't wait for Sainsburys to invest in some as the worst queues are here.0 -
I like them, have no problems using them, have used them in Boots, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and B & Q.They are good for using loose change, I agree. If I am buying a restricted product, I ask the assistant to authorise it when I approach the self-serve till area, instead of scanning it and then waiting for them to walk over to the till. Saves a bit of time that way.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

Another hater here. If you just want a couple of bits they're usually fine. If you're doing a huge shop they're hellish. My local supermarket no longer have any normal tills, so now I do online shopping to avoid ever going in there again. I once had a peeved assistant scan the rest of my shopping, presumably because she was sick of me asking for assistance every other item. She made it look so easy- and yet she knew the code she had to key in every so often when it beeped
Worse time ever was when I let OH scan because he gets so stressed bagging with the 'unexpected item in bagging area!' going off almost constantly. Turned out he was having just as many problems scanning, as I noticed when I looked at my receipt later that several things weren't on it:eek:
I like to think of myself as tech savvy but the ones I've used (in Tescos and Sainsburys) are rubbish. Given the option I would always rather deal with a person and get my shopping done in half the time.0 -

may I borrow your OH to take shopping please????? wouldnt half save some cash - the one and only time i let OH scan i had three items - but there were TEN on reciept - he didnt notice and just paid - took ages to sort out at customer (dis)service!!!0 -
Ooo I love the S'burys ones sooo much quicker than the queue - but it is annoying on the restricted products thing - I think they should age check your nectar card and then when you scan it at the start it authorizes it for you0

Don't shop their then? surely how a business operates is up to them and if you disagree with it then don't shop there. By using a manned till won't make any differance as that person is still gonna get paid if ur there or not

I know I dont know how they'd do it but I was thinknig it would be good if they could do it...maybe when we all have identity cards/nectar/passports in the brave new world at least I'll be able to buy booze without getting hassle every time (I'm 27 )0 -

I would suggest they put a chip in the cards with a 4 digit number that only the adults would know and use that for age verification
