"Self-Service" Checkout machines in Tesco

The first time I ever used the self service till in Tesco, I put my own bag in the bagging area which caused the "unexpected item in bagging area" announcement
They encourage you to take your own bags but their self service tills cant cope with this so in effect you have to pack twice. Dump stuff in the packing area and then once all paid, move items into bag.
We have them in our local sainsburys now and I dont get on with them at all. Today, I forgot my receipt so couldn't check I had the offer on the soup. last week, I scanned the wrong bar code on a reduced item thus paying more for it than I should have done. I also annoyed the girl that was looking after them because every item I scanned caused a problem. I wouldnt use them at all but sometimes when I've been in, there has been one person on the till and a big queue so the self service check outs seem the best option...0 -
Sainburys has to the worst all you hear is HAVE YOU SWIPPED YOUR NECTAR CARD. The answer is no because I aint got one grrrrrIm an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0

The only problems with the Tesco ones are that if an item is very light, it doesn't get detected so we tend to push on the conveyor belt
My 6yo can work it fine and really enjoys doing it
The ones that really get me are the Morrisons ones. Don't get me wrong, they work fine but that voice that comes out of it drives me insane!!!!! EVERY single item scanned, she tells me to put it in the bagging area as if I have forgotten what to do within 5 seconds of scanning the last item!!!!0 -
I hate them myself. If you buy anything age restricted (quite a large proportion of my Tesco shopping) you then have to wait for the woman with a face like a slapped 4rse to come over and huff and puff. The other day I bought an iron at Tesco and it didn't have a price on so I saw there wasn't a queue at the self service checkout so I scanned it through to check the price. Well, the reaction from the wicked witch, you would of thought I had just emptied my bowels in her living room.
Personally I prefer the normal checkout!
Normally when this happens I have to wait ages until they're done socialising with each other....
Gee, sorry you have to actually do your job instead of standing around.0 -
Have just been to Tesco, and it got me thinking!
I used, as always, the self scan machine. Can't be arsed interacting with the staff, if I can help it!!
Today, the previous customer (just seconds before me) had left their change - a £5 note. It got me thinking though.
1) If I keep it, it is "finders keepers", or technically theft?
2) If I hand it in, and the customer doesn't claim it, what happens with it?
I did hand it in, as the way I look at it is, if I left it, I would want the next customer to hand it in as well.
Oh and I know it was the previous customer as the machine wouldn't let me start scanning until the £5 was removed.0 -
Another question, something that has been "bugging me", and I know that some Tesco employees do frequent this forum, so may be able to answer!
On the bottom of a receipt when you don't use your club card, is a message telling you how many points you could have earned, and a bar code.
My question is, if I scan this bar code on my next (self scan) shop, will it credit me with these points?0 -

It would be theft yes. If you find something and hand it to the police, if ot is not claimed within a certain time it is handed to you. I'm not sure how Tesco would deal with it though.....0 -
I was doing fine on the one in Asda the other day, then part way through, a lady came from another SS till, and dumped her bags on the end of mine while she put her purse away. That sent the machine into a "unexpected item in bagging area" panic, while the lady just sauntered off leaving me to ask for help to reset it
Maybe she was the "unexpected bag".
:rotfl:I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!0 -
Without warning, self-checkout machines have begun appearing in supermarkets and pharmacy chains. 'Unexpected item in the bagging area! Please return item to the bagging area! Item removed from the bagging area!' the machines cry repeatedly, in a chorus of high-pitched, Dalek-like screams.
What's so unexpected anyway? You only swiped the item a second ago and were charged for it.
A few customers tut, others shift around uncomfortably. More than once, I've witnessed capable, professional men and women losing their cool and almost shouting at the damned things - or else going bright red in the face like humiliated children as they struggle to operate them in front of a queue of people.
Unexpected item in the bagging area? Totally expected feeling of rage pumping through your body? You're not alone.
