"Self-Service" Checkout machines in Tesco

  • I work at one of these supermarkets with self-scan checkouts. Unfortunately where I work we have 8 basket types and more often than not, they're manned by only one person. Luckily, I only have the pleasure of working on them one day in the week.
If it is busy (which is a lot of the time) I stand at the monitor where I can sort out the majority of problems which occure (unexpected items/please wait for assistance) but when needed I go over. I cannot stand it if I am helping a customer and three others are waving for my attention when all they need is to remove the item they have not scanned, or need me to add the price of an item. I understand that self-scan is a machine, but I am not. I can only do one thing at a time, and when finished with one customer, I'll return to the monitor to clear the remaining security prompts. That way I don't need to visit each till to clear them!
With reguards to the reduced items, if it's a barcode reduced item and it does not scan, it has to be entered by the operator as it could be a security issue if entered on the main system. Hence why it will not allow the customer to enter the code.
However, I am with the majority of customers and I cannot stand self-scan checkouts because, unless you know exactually how they work and you don't have any items that restrict you (alcohol, dvds, clothes etc) then it's not quick at all.

    Rant over! :p

It sounds as if you could have seen to all four customers faster on a till. Stupid idea by someone wanting to cut the workforce.I feel sorry for the supermarket staff.
  • Even the brand new B&Q on the A3 near New Malden has self-scan checkouts now :(

    .... I hate them!

My attitude is if I wanted a job scanning goods at Tesco I would apply for a job - may not get accepted though because I doubt I could manage to be as sullen as the assistant who carries on her conversation with her colleague as she resets the machine - avoid them at all costs in Langport Somerset.

    Ooooh feel better now!

Hahahaha good old Langport! I grew up there but moved away about 10yrs ago... the Tesco's killed that town...

I was shown to use one at Tesco's on Friday, by a vary nice helpful assistant. I only had 4 items to buy so I gave it a go and found it surprisingly easy and user friendly. Wouldn't fancy using it for my big shop but great for a few items.

I hate these too and everytime I use one my child wants to climb on it or sit on it. And I have a well behaved child but there is something about these machines that is alluring to children.

If you use one of the bigger ones with a belt you can bag until you get to the end and then the next customer starts putting their stuff through even though your not finished!
  • I've got the lady talking in my head now:

PLEASE PLACE THE ITEM IN THE BAG

    UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA

    PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE

    ARGH!!
What's fur ye won't go by ye!
  • my local Mr T has removed the self-service tills with the belts!

They've left the ones where you have to pack everything straight away. And because I use my own bags, I always need someone to "OK" my bag when I put it on the scale...aaaaargh.

...at least my Mr T had the dividers that you could put between your shopping and theirs and that way you weren't in a hurry... ...but now that they've taken those ones away...I think I will start queueing to the normal tills again...

    Do what I do,

Don't pay, until you have all of your shopping bagged, and put into the trolley.
The other person cant start scanning until you've paid for your stuff,
