I've had some sort of error or check required every time I've tried to use them. It particularly annoys me that they purportedly encourage re-use of bags, yet if you put a decent re-usable carrier bag in the packing area it sets off the unexpected item thingy. It also annoys me that these are the only checkouts open late at night, when there are usually only about 2 people using them at any one time, who could be served much more quickly by the assistant who has to sort out all the error messages, age-restricted item checks etc.

They don't register green bag points, either.
Nor do they like Clubcard Plus.

Totally agree that ( at least in Tescos) they are a waste of time
    1) unexpected item in bagging area - despite there not being one
    2) having to call supervisor to allow scanning of small tube of bostik glue ( restricted item)
    3) people deciding to use them for their entire weekly shop - then spending 20 seconds trying to find the position of the bar code for each item (sorry - usually the older fraternity)
    4) noting that the operator assisted queue has gone down far quicker than the self service line
    5) despite knowing all this, continuing to use the *&^ing things in the belief that , this time, it will work perfectly and save me 1 minute of my time

  • ...I "love" the self service check out points. I know that every time I buy alcohol  , the staff member has to OK it. Then, if I buy DVDs or CDs, I get to go to the customer service desk to get the tags taken off...or if the handsome security guard is on duty, I just conveniently forget that the DVDs have been security tagged!!! :blushing:

I don't use the check out points without the belt - the scales won't let me use my own bag... ...and I really don't want anymore plastic bags...

...if you enjoy the trouble that the staff get because of the self service tills... :rotfl:

    I *LOVE* self-service checkouts.

I never "forget" to give me my green points (btw, at sainsburys, you go into "find item" and select "B" and it's there as "Bag re-use" or similar).

I don't raise my own eyebrows when all I've bought is chocolate and pringles. Or a random selection of microwaveable dinners and a pineapple.

I don't take a week to scan three items because I'm chatting. I can multitask.

I don't put unexpected items in the bagging area. Surely you don't need to get it reset every time...JUST TAKE THE UNEXPECTED ITEM OUT/remove the toddler/slap the woman with her purse. I scan, check it's appeared on the screen (and at the correct price - remembering that multibuys etc come off after the subtotalling) and then put it in the bagging area.

If I'm using my own bag, I work out which order I need to scan in so that when it's spitting out my receipt etc I can bag it easily. It only takes 30 seconds to do that as you're going along.

I don't put eggs at the bottom and milk on top. Or bread at the bottom and cans on top
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

i hate these things!! but just before christmas i was in tescos with my mum (we looked in the mens clothing bit as my brother had asked for a light jacket for christmas and she did not know what he meant) she selected a coat and i had 2 rools of wrapping paper on offer. then my mum being my mum sent me to pay as she needed to loo!! i went to the checkouts but they were queing 3 deep but there was a self serve till empty so i chose that - i put all 3 items through but the till did not come up with the offer price on the roll wrap. i got to the screem that asks for payment but no reduction so request assistance. the assistant finishes her (long) conversation and asks the problem she puts her card in and loads of discout comes up (the wraping offer, 25% off coats (not advertised in the clothing area) vat changes , the total amount comes to 5 pound and a bit less than i was expecting!! are these machines supposed not to give you the offers you expect - unless you request the difference? my mum was supprised when i told her she had given me too much (she paid me for the coat and i had £7 change without working out what i owed for the wrapping paper - took ages to work out the right money i owed her!!

I prefer the self scanner you get at Watirose which means you can scan each item as you put it in your trolley:)

That doesn't work on the ones in my local Asda. You have to get the lady to reset it as it just locks up and won't let you scan anything else.

I don't normally shop in this Asda - just pop in occasionally if it's handy where I'm working. Maybe it's just the tills in this particular store.
Here I go again on my own....

Ooooh, do Waitrose have this? Shame I live nowhere near a Waitrose. I used to love Safeway's self-scan system, scanning as you pick up the items and packing as you go round.

Our Tesco self-scans fail frequently - they don't seem to be able to keep up with the speed I can scan and pack stuff. But most annoying was the other day when I was in a hurry - scanned half a dozen items and then the machine froze. Assistant couldn't solve the problem, and I had to re-scan on the next till ..... I don't mind that, it's just that an apology from the Assistant for their failing technology wouldn't have gone amiss :D

I hate the ones in Asda though my boyfriend uses them if we only have a few things I tend to go to the basket checkout.
Went the other night to the big asda in cramlington on the home, it was nearly 5pm and there was no-one on the two basket tills.
The self-services machines were backed up as were the trolley tills but I went to the trolley till and managed to get through quicker than I would of done had I used the self service tills.

The self - service tills are alway stating unexpected item in ours and the checking person sometimes wanders off so you have to wait a few minutes for them to check something through.
