i decided to cover one of my rhubarb plants with a bucket to force it on....

Q: do people always force their rhubarb? as i had heard that in later years the crop isnt so good!

I usually forced one of my rhubarb plants to get an early crop. The first two or three sticks are now ready for picking. However, I don't overdo it and be greedy and the plant then crops prolifically for the remainder of the summer. I think the secret is to feed the plant well with plenty of well rotted or composted manure and then it has enough strength to keep going into the autumn.

Skint Gypsy - it's good to experiment and I hope your mushroom kit is successful if you buy one but I was given one as a gift by somebody who knew I liked gardening. I tried to follow the instructions as closely as possible and didn't get a single mushroom. Ended up by digging the material into my veggie borders in disgust and wondered if they would start growing in a different environment. They didn't! I suspect that some of these kits may be rather old by the time they've eventually passed through the retail system and possibly all the mushroom spores have died off.

how close do people follow planting instructions..... ie spacing between plants and rows?

i have planted some beans/peas, to go into two 4ft by 1ft rows - following the instructions the max i could fit in is 8 plants in a single row.

would people double up ie 2 rows of 8 in each 1ft row

Good morning everyone. I have planted out my fourth sweetcorn under its bottle/cloche and i have planted out a tomato plant in the same way. I have very little space anywhere except in the garden, so things need to be strong. I know they will grow slower, but they are all alive so i will just keep an eye on them all :)

Good luck everyone, spring is springing here :)

    Hi guys :)

With regard to the mushroom box, i was given it as a birthday present and am going to try it, i had one years ago that worked, but have only known these ones to fail. I will give it a go this year, need to add the next layer tomorrow :)

Well the weather is a little grey and cold here this morning, but my herbs are starting to sprout in the spare room, and there is less evidence of the brown scale on my lemon tree as well, so i am hoping the spray is working.

Right well i should try and do some work, and then maybe i will head outside this afternoon :)

Good weather to you all :)
