    Hi Joanne

Firstly you don't need to apologise about asking stuff - how else are you supposed to find stuff out ;D

I'm a not that bothered about the ping test at the moment as some systems don't acknowledge pings.

If I've got the correct router model's manual you are looking at a web page with something like "http://10.0.0.2/doc/advance.htm" in the address bar. You are on the 'Diagnostics' page.

On the Left hand side there should be a link labelled 'Wireless', with 'Basic Settings' just underneath it. Whats in here? I'm hoping this is the section where you 'create' your wireless network by doing something similar to the following (this was specific to Frans BTW):
    3. Fill in the following on the 'wireless settings' page:

    a) 'Under Wireless Network' -> 'Name SSID'. Put what you want your network to be called. As a security thing don't call it anything that identifies it with you (ie. not 'Frans Network' but something like 'redapple')

    b) In the same section Select your 'Region', Leave 'Channel' and 'Mode' alone for now.

    c) Under 'Wireless access point' tick 'Enable Wireless Access Point' - turn 'Allow Broadcast of name (SSID)' on if you want the name of your network freely accessable (maybe for test purposes!)

    d) Wireless Station Access List - This is used to list the MAC addresses that are allowed to connect to this router wirelessly. If I was putting in a wireless network at home I would definately use this but for now leave it blank!. How to get the MAC addresses will be done later!

    e) To begin with leave the security as 'Automatic' and the Encryption Strength as disabled.

This will give you an unsecure wireless network - but at least you can see if it works!

If I've got it completely wrong could you e-mail me the manuals if you have them in electronic form?

Or failing that get to the diagnostics page, hit your 'Print Screen' button then open word or paint or something similar. Hit Edit->Paste and you should get a picture of your current screen. Save this file and e-mail it to me. (Mail address should be open in profile)

See how you go with this bit - I'm trying not to overload you at the moment so you may need to ask more questions.

having run the diagnostics it says that Ping primary DNS 194.74.65.69 Fail and Test PPPoPvc 0 PPPOE connection Unknown.
ADSL uses PPPoA (Point to Point Protocol over ATM) so check the router settings.

    VPI should be 0
    VCI should be 38

If there's an option for Multiplexing Method this should be VC / VC based or similar

    Very true:

    VCI should be 38

If there's an option for Multiplexing Method this should be VC / VC based or similar

But if the manual I looked at is correct then on the Diagnostics page of that router it checks every kind of connection that may be available regardless. Hopefully there will have been a section something like

    "Test PPPOA connection Pass"

Joanne - could you check if this is present on the Diagnostics please.

I just have to say that Toxteth O'Grady has had me turn off my software firewalls (Sygate & SP2) because there is a hardware firewall in the router which he has told me is far superior to the software ones. The consequence is....... my pages are zipping along now and I can flit from page to page whereas before I was crawling. :D ;D
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........
