Reading back over the thread a lot of terms are used (by me and others) that will mean nothing to most people. (ADSL, MAC, PPPoA, PPPoE, DHCP, DNS etc). Is there value in creating a glossary of abbreviations (maybe on sticky thread) so that necessary evils don't need to be detailed twice? Maybe with guides?

    That is a great idea!

A lot of the problems I have had using a computer has been boxes to tick and choices to make about things I don't have a clue what they mean, and I'm sure lots of people are in the same boat. I'll start a thread now.

I appreciate the time repliers have taken to answer my network question, I'm sure others will find this thread useful too.

I have to put off sorting out the wireless connection at the moment cos I have other things that need doing - just in case it takes another few hours to sort out!

Fran, I hope that everything is good now. I have had to bring the pc back to the ethernet cable. I have run a diagnostics test and it says Ping primary DNS 194.74.65.69 FAIL. I'm going to run back through the thread as I know you were advised about PING. Am I right in assuming that the advce given was specific to the router that you are using? I know what you mean about wishing you'd never started!!! (An extension cable to the spare room sounds very inviting at the moment!)

I think you got lost in the saga that was Frans network :-)

I have read over your first post and have the following observations

    1. You have 2 PC's - One Desktop running Windows XP, and One Laptop running Windows 98.

    2. You have a Origo adsl Wireless router - which I assume also has normal ports on it to connect PC's to it with wires.

    3. I'm not clear what network cards you have in either of your PC's? (Both ethernet (wired) and wireless cards)

    4. You need to carry out the following steps (extracted from Frans saga):

    1. Get your PC talking to the router (Wired)
    2. Get your Router talking to the internet
    3. Get your router creating a wireless network before removing the ethernet connection between one PC and the router.
    4. Get one client device wirelessly talking to the router/Access Point unencrypted.
    5. Apply chosen authentication/encryption (WEP-Open, WPA-TKIP or WPA-PSK) to these 2 devices.
    6. Apply MAC filtering.
    7. Repeat 4, 5 and 6 for remaining wireless clients.

What I suggest is you go back to the start and try to follow the steps above. If a step fails then I recommed you start a new thread for yourself at that point so you don't get buried in this one. Break down what kit you have and what steps you have taken.

Even if I missed the point completely I would recommend a new thread with your own problems and setup detailed in it.

    Best of Luck

I reckon that advice would make a good sticky :)

Godders thanks for that. To clarify I have an ethernet port in the pc and a wireless card and just a wireless lan card for the laptop (but I am much less bothered about the laptop as that is staying in the room with the router). The Origo router (which is also called safecom)has 4 ethernet ports and a USB cable too.
I am now connected via ethernet and the router to the internet, so do i take it I have passed 1 +2? How do I make 3 work and set up the router wirelessly, having run the diagnostics it says that Ping primary DNS 194.74.65.69 Fail and Test PPPoPvc 0 PPPOE connection Unknown.
I am sorry to keep asking stuff!

Fran, I hope that everything is good now.

Still working on it Joanne! I think Sheel is working on it too, so we're not alone. I will try to get all this network information together (when I understand fully what's involved!) and put it under the "Network" posts under one of the stickies. I think a lot of problems are caused with people like me who expect to just plug these things in and they work. As soon as unknown technical terms start cropping up it gets difficult! It would be nice to have a simple breakdown of networking requirements to bridge the gap between computer users and techies. I hope you are having success now.

The trouble is there are so many subjects that could be stickies! Another problem is that for someone like me, saying "apply chosen authentication" doesn't mean anything! You need a certain amount of knowledge to do those type of things and if you have that info you're less likely to not succeed in what you're doing. See above post - I'll try to put it all into one post.
