Networking 3 computers ?

There may be 2 'Status' tabs been mentioned here. The one that "Toxteth_OGrady" mentioned in Network Connections' and the one I mentioned on the Routers config page.
Which one is greyed out? (Makes a big difference)
The one T_o'G mentioned. Virgin is my ISP - thanks for the offer of looking up the help!I have to go off the computer for a break :P but have printed the mac info from Netgear to have a go in a bit.
T_O'G - I have no problem connecting with my Alcatel modem, just the new wireless router/modem. I am using cable as they suggest this in the instructions and provide the cable too.Torgwen.....................

It says media disconnected (is that cos I'm using a different connection as I can't get onto the internet throught the router?). The physical address is not the default netgear one.
If it says media disconnected then there is no connection - check the patch lead between the router and the PC. Also check that it is not disabled in the network connections. Also in network connections you should see an icon for an Internet Gateway which is the router.
Also try start->run->cmd <enter>
then ping 192.168.0.1
if it times out there is no connection
The physical address is the MAC address which is unique to the LAN adapter. This is different to the IP address.
For a LAN to work an IP address and appropriate subnet mask is required.
IP's in the range 192.168.x.x , 10.x.x.x (can't remember the private Class B range as it's rarely used).
By default the netgear uses 192.168.0.x range
so your ip should be something like 192.168.0.2 and the subnet should be 255.255.255.0
For internet access from a LAN you need a gateway address (where it jumps from the LAN to the internet) in which the default is 192.168.0.1
You also need addresses of the DNS servers (which convert names into numbers) - these will depend on your ISP.
By default the Netgear should act as a DHCP server. i.e. it should automatically assign all of the above to your network card (usually called a NIC = network interface card).
If you find it doesn't then you can try setting it manually.
Try IP address 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS primary server 192.168.0.1
or use the ones from my settings below (pipex but should work on any ISP).
The DNS Suffix is blank as my machine is not part of a domain.

Your PC has no network connection.
No point worrying about the new router until you get your home network set up sorted out.
With the cable supplied by Netgear ensure your PC's network card is connected ot the router (you can add the other 2 PCs to the network later.
On your PC go to START -> Control Panel -> Network Setup Wizard. After the first couple of 'nexts' select 'This computer connects to the Internet through a Residential Gateway....' Then complete the wizard. The icon in Network Connections under status should now show the kind of settings in blinky's previous post. You should also be able to browse to your router now.
If that doesn't work check in the PC's device manager that the NIC is working correctly. Also go via START -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Ststem Information. In System Information slect 'Tools' in the toolbar, run Net Diagnostics and post your results.604!0 -
Sorry - misunderstood where you were in the setup process. (BTW Virgin's support assumes you are using the modem provided and is very little help.)
Do what T_o'G just suggested as a starting point.0 -

I've been through that wizard a few times.
Blinky - My computer has all the same settings you have referred to.
Tried the "ping" thing - timed out. Will try more in a bit.Torgwen.....................

Don't mix the two. Plug in either your new router or your old modem. Otherwise the test results will be confusing.
1. Turn off everything.
2. Diconnect your old modem.
3. Connect the cable supplied between your PC and the new router
4. Connect your new router to the ADSL line.
5. Turn on the new router and wait a minute
6. Turn on the PC and log in.
7. Go to a command prompt and do the 'ping thing' as follows
8. Click Start->Run
9. Type cmd and press enter
10. Type 'ping 192.168.0.1'
11. If you get a response open Internet Explorer
12. Navigate to http://192.168.0.1
13. This should take you you to the configuration page (web based) of the router itself.
See if you get this far and we go from there.0 -
OK, looks like you now have LAN connectivity with your router.
If you haven't already done so, disconnect your old USB modem and put it away - it's alraedy confusing the issue.
Now right click on the Local Area Connection in Network Connections and try Status -> Support -> Details again.
What does it say for Default Gateway. Should be something like 192.168.0.1.
If it does open your web browser (Internet Explorer) and in the Address Bar type 192.168.0.1 (i.e. the address of your router) and enter. From there you should be able to set up your Internet connection. There will be a menu (usu. either ISP or WAN) that will let you put in your user name, password and other connection details.
Try it and then post result.604!0 -
Try and borrow a patch lead (LAN cable) from someone - could be a faulty cable.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

I have to keep swapping from old modem in order to get on the internet and read these posts!
I've just tried what Godders said.
Got response with "ping thing".
Went to Internet Explorer (before had been using Mozilla).
Got to the configuration page.
Checked details on basic settings again.
Under connection status it says:-
Connection time - 00:00:00
Connection to server- failed
Negotiation - sometimes says "LCP down" and sometimes "Initialise LCP"
Authentication - CHAP authentication failed.
Do I need to worry about socks, gophers and proxy settings? (Proxy setting is serious, other two are meaningless to me unless it's foot socks and Gordon the Gopher )
Even though I have old modem connected to phone line now, in the task bar at the bottom, the LAN connection says it is connected when you hover over it.Torgwen.....................
