Networking 3 computers ?

  • Hi Fran,

    Gettin' there slowly.

At least you can network internally between your PC and router so we just gotta try get your router connected on the Internet.
Even though I have old modem connected to phone line now, in the task bar at the bottom, the LAN connection says it is connected when you hover over it.
    .

That's normal - it just indicates that your local network connections are good.  With ADSL as an 'always on' connection you get no additional taskbar indication that you are connected to the Internet.
Do I need to worry about socks, gophers and proxy settings?
     NO.

Probably seems like you've done it a million times already but it will be worthwhile running through the basics again.

First, when trying to get the router to connect make sure the phone line is firmly plugged in to the router.

Go to BASIC SETTINGS in the router:

Click 'YES' for 'Does your Internet Connection require a login?'

    For ENCAPSULATION select PPPoA.

For Login enter the username that Virgin gave you in full (including the .......@virgin.whatever) and your Virgin password.

For INTERNET IP ADDRESS click 'Get Dynamically From ISP' unless you have a static IP address assigned that you know.

For DNS ADDRESS click 'Get Automatically From ISP.'

    For NAT click 'Enable.'

Next go into the ADSL SETTINGS menu and for Multiplexing select 'VC Based.'

    For VPI enter zero.

For VCI enter 38 and Apply.

    Click on CONNECT.

Hopefully that should do the trick!

If it doesn't connect there's probably an incorrect setting in the router somewhere (with a CHAP Authentication failure it could be an incrrect username or password).  To bowl it out try the following BT engineering test:

In the router BASIC SETTINGS enter the following username

    speedtest@speedtest_domain

    Enter the following password

    testing

    Try to connect.

If it connects OK go to Internet Explorer and type in the address http://217.35.209.142

It should open a BT Speedtest web page.  If it does then your router is OK and you will need to talk to Virgin.

If it doesn't then there is a problem with the router.  You can then try a Factory Reset and start again and/or a firmware upgrade to Version 1.05.00 if you haven't already done so.

     8) 8)  Good luck!

    TOG,

Checked all the settings again, tried the "speedtest" test and it didn't connect (operation timed out).

Looking at the settings for the network adaptor, there is no network address under the advanced tab. I tried entering a couple of addresses (but I'm not sure what my network address is) but it still wouldn't work. Is this relevant anyway? When I tried one address it said it didn't connect "because the network did not assign a network address to the computer".

Is there some other setting on the computer that might solve the problem, some stupid thing that I haven't altered to do with settings? (That's what it feels like as everything seems to say it should work.)

I've emailed Virgin support (very difficult to find email address on their website!), can't phone them cos it's an 09.... number and I have blocked them cos of kids! (And to change that you have to write to BT.)

I'm just going to double check IE and Outlook Express settings now.

Any more suggestions very welcome! :)

Thanks to everyone who has taken time to reply. :)

  • Hi Fran,

Do you have DHCP disabled in the Netgear router? It should be enabled.

Could you right click on the LAN connection icon in the taskbar, click on the Support tab, click 'Details......' and post everything it says there except Physical Address.

    Yes it is enabled.

    IP address 192.168.02
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway 192.168.01
    DHCP Server 192.168.01
    Lease obtained 24.10.2004
    Lease expires 27.10.2004
    DNS Server 192.168.0.1
    Wins server (blank)

    What lease?!

  • Hi Fran,

Right click on the LAN taskbar Icon again. Select Status and then Properties. Scroll down and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click on Properties.

Click on Use the Following IP Address and enter:

    IP address 192.168.02
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway 192.168.01

Then click on Use the Following DNS Server Addresses and enter:

    212.159.13.49
    212.159.13.50

Next browse to your router and in the BASIC SETTINGS enter exactly the same two DNS server addresses.

Not quite sure what you mean here. Are you talking about your router or the NIC in your PC?

If you can connect everything up and browse OK to http://192.168.0.1 and get to the Router configuration screen you can STOP changing settings on your PC for now. Your PC is quite happily talking to the router.

Next, you need to extablish if your router can connect to the internet OK. How it gets onto the internet is controlled by the settings on the 'Basic Settings' WEB page. (Nowhere else)

From your previous post where you clicked on the 'Status' tab and reported the following:

    "Connection time - 00:00:00
    Connection to server- failed
Negotiation - sometimes says "LCP down" and sometimes "Initialise LCP"
Authentication - CHAP authentication failed. "

Your new router is trying to connect to your ISP and failing due to 'CHAP authentication failure'. Basically, wrong user ID, password or authentication method. Look on the 'Status' page (through the web browser) and tell us what you have listed.

    P.S.

From what you have just posted your PC is getting an IP address perfectly happily, the lease refers to the amount of time your IP address the router has given you is valid for - don't worry, it will renegotiate each time you turn your PC on.

    Which 'Status'

If you mean the status page for the router just open mozilla and navigate to http://192.168.0.1 and see if the configuration page opens

If you cannot get to this check your Mozilla settings under 'Tools ->Options' In the 'General' section click on the Connetion settings button. Make sure you have 'Direct Connection to the internet' set.

Quite agree. Just double checking everything's in order at the PC and the router.

    As I posted earlier
If it doesn't connect there's probably an incorrect setting in the router somewhere (with a CHAP Authentication failure it could be an incrrect username or password). To bowl it out try the following BT engineering test:

In the router BASIC SETTINGS enter the following username

If it doesn't then there is a problem with the router. You can then try a Factory Reset and start again and/or a firmware upgrade to Version 1.05.00 if you haven't already done so.

I am strongly suspecting it's a problem in the router because the BT logon doesn't require CHAPS authentication.

Never any harm in checking settings, my post with 'STOP' in it was being written at the same time as yours - Fran appeared to have an OK connection but was mentioning going playing in IE and Outlook settings.  It wasn't meant to refer to the checks you posted.

    Fran

Please post the details from the routers (web based) 'Status' Page and the 'Basic Settings' page
