I had a dehumidifer delivered on 16th. Thank god

In fact I only ordered it on the 15th and chose to pay for 1st class as I was desperate. If I had took free delivery I would have lost it.

Surely to keep your TV would be theft, as the TV is your property, not the property of Empire Direct, and as such should not be held as leverage over them.

I suppose they may, however, say that as Empire Direct will not now be paying their charges, their bill for repair of your set must be paid by you before its return, as the warranty no longer exists.

Which I could pass onto Direct Line to sort out I suppose.

As it is under 12 months old, the manufacturer's warranty is still in force. In that case I would try to get it back unrepaired, if possible, and let the manufacturer state their preferred repairer, who they will have an arrangement with.

As an example, I won a JVC TV in a Sainsbury's comp (few years ago) then it went wrong in the first year. JVC had a preferred repairer fairly near us and we had to take it there ourselves then collect it again, but JVC covered the cost of repair direct with the repair place. The agency running the comp did not get involved, in the same way that I don't suppose Direct Line will want to get involved, and I used my prizewinner's letter as my 'receipt' in the same way as you probably have Direct Line correspondence as your 'receipt'.

  • Hmm it's an Apro, which is a poor quality brand, doubt I'd find it easy to find them in this country.

In that case, if you can get it back unrepaired, I would certainly sound out Direct Line and see what they advise as there must be some sort of manufacturer's warranty. On the optimistic side, you never know, if you chase the repair shop again without mentioning Empire going bust and act all innocent, they might just return it to you fully functioning with no charge.

I would have though that they would try and sell all goods in stock at a discounted rate? Guess they might be returning them to the manufacturers or suppliers?

I don't think they actually hold much, if any, stock. They rely on being paid up front and then they buy the item and ship it to you. That was definitely the case when I bought my TV. Credit card was debited immediately, TV not delivered for a couple of weeks.

Anyone know anymore about the 5 year warranties??
