British Gas Threats (Please Help)

Thank you to the people who have helped,
Will try and get this sorted asap.
And I did not switch it over to avoid paying (I only recently found out there was outstanding debt, so it was hardly planned)
And like I said earlier, I put it in my name because I wanted to switch suppliers/tarrifs - This was the only way I could make that happen, please understand that.
I just want to get it sorted. We cannot afford to pay it all off at once. I'm going to propose to BG a weekly settlement until we can afford to pay it off in full.
And If you think I am a scammer, then maybe you should look at all the scroungers who claim benefits and sit on their !!!! all day and go surfing on the weekend.

You stated:I switched it over to my name to help out my mother and because BG were refusing for her to switch energy suppliers with fairer tariffs.
The reason she couldn't switch was beacause of the debt.
You now state:I only recently found out there was outstanding debt, so it was hardly planned
Do not those statements contradict each other?0 -

While the switch over was processing, the electricity was still under my mothers name after the bankruptcy and it was around £200 used during that time, which I know she is liable to pay and it WILL be paid.
Assuming eveything was done correctly by BG, if you hadn't registered as a new customer with them, they would have objected to the transfer to the new supplier, as your mother's accounts weren't closed so the reason for objecting (outstanding debt on the account) still stands. As suggested above, you need to confirm with your local MPAS service who is actually supplying the property.
If it is still with BG, you would need to register with them first to close your mother's account before the supply can be moved to a new provider, however they will usually ask for proof of residency and identification - ie proof of who you are and that you have only just moved into the property.
Knowing BG, if you do try to open an account with them and their investigation determines you have been living at the same address (so have been using part of the gas which is outstanding), then if the supply is disconnected and the debt passed on to a debt collection agency, this information would also be passed on and they may try to persue you as well as your Mum for the balance.0 -
This can be quite easy to resolve providing you speak the right people.
The first thing you need to do is to check your mpan on the letters from BG and your current supplier and ensure that these are the same - every property has a unique mpan - if they are different, they are for different properties (note - very few properties do have 2 mpans, if you have gas & elec you are not one of these)
If they are the same, ask your current supplier to check the website ecoes to ensure that they do supply you & if this is confirm, confirm with BG that your mothers account is now closed. If the account is closed & they no longer hold supply, they have absolutely no right to disconnect the supply of the property & would not be able to obtain a warrant from the court. (NOTE: I would strongly advise to resolve before they went to court as often you can be charged the cost of the court fees)
Whoever is responsible for the property is responsible for the gas and the electricity and again BG will be well within their rights to ask for proof that you are not responsible for the debt if they have your name on the account, so you need to be prepared to prove this. If the debt is only around £200 then they should be prepared to arrange an agreement with you - I would advise to discuss with them, and if not satisified, escalate the call until have a resolution. Failing this go to consumer direct or ofgem and lodge a complaint - whilst this is being investigated they should not be chasing you for the debt.
Hope this helps.0 -
Not true, you could have arranged for the outstanding debt to have been paid
Oh, and after so many promises too. No wonder BG are onto you.
I'm sorry to say this, but your a bit of a knob aren't you?
What the hell is your problem? Do you purposely troll around here preying on people with problems? Perhaps you've never had money worries and live compfy, well good for you pal.
If you got nothing helpful to say, then please get out my thread please... Jesus man, what is with you hate-filled people?
Anyways - Thank you tripled and lucybel, that is very helpful info.
Thanks again to the people who have actually been helpful and not spout nothing but crap.

Hi
This has been an absolute nightmare.
The story so far:
We rang Ecoes and it turns out BG were still supplying the property's electricity supply. Swalec were also billing us as well, so 2 suppliers were supplying electricity!!!!
Swalec then refunded all our payments with a cheque...
It also turns out that BG refused Swalec to take over the supply, even though they did, sent me a welcome pack and billed me every month.
BG was informed by the OR and sent a copy of the bankruptcy.
But unknown to me, they continued to supply the electricity and at the same time, I was being supplied by swalec.
It only came to head, a year later when I received letters to disconnect the supply.
It turns out that BG declined me to take over the supply because of the debt that was on my mums account.
My mums argument with BG, what right did they have to decline me to take over the supply, when there is no reason for me to be declined. Had my mum known that they were still supplying, she would had paid the outstanding balance owed after the bankruptcy took place and initated the switch over with Swalec to my name.
BG have now said, that the reason why I was declined was because they recieved the letter of bankruptcy after I applied to change to Swalec.
As to date, BG say my mum owes quite a large amount and has to be paid before I can takeover with Swalec.
Any advice, my rights etc would be most appreciated as I am at witts end on what to do now.
Going to contact the Ombudsman now.0
