In cosmetics (in Extra Stores) I noted that L'Oreal, Mabelline, Bourjois and Max Factor all had products on promotion ranging from 1 -3 quid off certain lippies/mascara/foundation - "offer valid to 28/2/06" - printed on card display surrounds. All scanned at full price using customer scan (i.e. minus advertised discount).
I loaded my basket - only to find that at checkout the advertised discount WAS taken off, although comes up (wrongly) as a "multibuy".
Well I changed my mind, of course about my purchase ( and on a happy note MrT mistakenly refunded 11 quid more than I spent !!)

Has the price scanner lied to anyone else?
    Why does this happen?

Clipboard2 youll find that the customer scan does not take into account any discount which is added at the till ie BOGOF, 2 FOR THREE, 20% DISCOUNT etc or as in your case the money off make up. These offers are programmed into the system to activate on certain conditions ie when you buy three of a certain product on buy three for two it will apply a discount equal to the single price - hope i've made sense!!!!

"YES, BUT" - the customer price scanner lied when I just bought ONE SINGLE ITEM alone (tried it in another Tesco) - ie no "certain conditions" to be activated at checkout till. The advertised discounts applied to each single item, it wasnt a BOGOF or a 3 for 2 promo!
For example, L'Oreal Ultimate Curl Mascara - advertised on card display surround at as "2 quid off until 28/2/06" old price crossed out, new price printed on display. Customer self scans at original higher price - but checkout deducts 2 quid for this SINGLE ITEM (recording it wrongly as a multibuy).
The same happened with a SINGLE ITEM purchase of Mabelline lippie, at another Tesco (display - '1 quid off in Feb', customer scan - full higher price, checkout -1 quid deducted -but listed incorrectly as a multibuy on receipt!)

So the price scanner does lie!!!

I tried a CD on the price scanner today and it came up 'please contact a member of staff'!

In my experience it ALWAYS works if you scan it twice!

might be a daft question... but does every store have a price scanner? can't say I've ever noticed one in the stores near me.. but then again, I've not been looking for one!

Let me clarify this alittle (I hope!). The price scanners are a simple bit of kit. they purely hold the selling price for the product. They can't deal with the multisaver type promotions as already described. Now sometimes the people who set up the offers use the multisaver mechanism to reduce prices. The 20% off CD's is a good example. Sometimes the buyer will just reduce the price as normal. However sometimes they will use the Multisaver system to deduct 20% of the standard price (This is why you often see 'reduction will be made at the till' type messages). In this case the certain conditions to trigger the offer is that you buy 1 of the item :) So it might look like a regular price reductions on the signage etc but actually its using the multisaver system on the till.

    Hope that helps :)

I recently bought an x box and was overcharged, the refund caused war at CS desk, 3 staff behind the desk, 3 managers at my side of desk and me on phone to head office.
The manager was trying to argue that what i had bought was a different model, which they didn't have in stock, (I wasn't sure how I could have bought it, and have it in my trolley to leave the store with).
Head office were as much use as chocolate fireplace saying they couldn't overrule the stores decison not to refund.
After much arguing on SEL's etc, I said I would take the product without refund, photograph the two identical boxes which were going through at different prices and photgraph the SEL to get further advice from TS. Electrical manager then went off to get me permission from store manager to photograph in the store, came back and without another word to me said to the CS, give her the money back. The witches behind CS were aghast you'd think it was coming out of their wages, and practically threw stuff at me, said I didn't need my receipt cos I hadn't paid for it...etc (I did get it as I had other items i'd purchased on there).
This was Stockton on Tees, I've never been treated like that at any other Tesco, and having gone over it on here, think I should put it in writing to HO.

There is something wrong with the X Box and I don't know what to do, taking it back to the shop when they've scribbled all over the receipt does not appeal to me.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
