Rich - It feels like I'm in serious need of a snow day tomorrow :D, but weirdly if I hadnt been cold I could have gone on longer - it was actually easier to keep running than it was to stop by that point - every set of lights was total torture...how weird is that?? And apart from the sprint mile - I stayed in the fat burning zone all the way - didnt get out of breath once :D. I have sooo earned the KFC Im going to have shortly (when I can stand up to go get it! ;)).

Thanks Chris - sorry to hear you're still not feeling well :(

I can't really say that I am not feeling well - just this annoying cough which is setting me back. The girls in the arms are insisting I go and see Doc Holiday. Better obey I suppose :D

Oh so I tried to go to bed...but I'm in so much pain I cant sleep - I know its only aches because nothing specific hurts - it all does :(

I hope I dont feel like this after the marathon - I want to party ;)

Becky think its just the cold...I very rarely ache these days and especially as ive only done 11 miles...I can barely get off the sofa tonight as muscles are so sore. You've done a far greater distance in the cold so you will feel pah. Do you have an electric blanket or one you can borrow (yes I know its a bit 80's) but will warm them up!

Thanks Sally! Sorry to hear you're suffering too - 11 miles is way beyond the point at which I usually get stiff (usually anything over 6-7 miles)...I do wonder if some people get it more than others??

No blanket but its very warm here (flatmates insist on having the heating on overnight...), and tomorrow's a rest day thank goodness :D

Hehe Welcome to the world of distance running!

    Dont worry, nothing's wrong!

Basically, you've just emptied your body, just about completely, of glycogen. All the muscle cells are now screaming for any sugars they can get their hands on.

This is the purpose of long runs - to train the body to work more efficiently and use glycogen more sparingly.

By the time you get to the marathon your body will be used to this - although you will still have aches and pains afterwards, nothing sufficient to stop the partying though!:p

Oh thought you'd gone to bed - was hoping for a guru answer :D

Thanks coachie - but ouch :(

I was thinking about trying out one of those recovery shakes - do you reckon they are any good?? Not today by the way obviously its too late now but next weekend maybe...
  • Recovery shakes?

Basically, you need to some ready carbs, such as bananas, bread, jacket potatoes etc within half an hour of finishing a really long run.

You wont be hungry at this stage, but it is the time when assimilation of complex carbohydrates into the bloodstream is at its greatest.
