This is just an open question to everybody - how do you keep going in a psychological sense? I find that I could probably keep running for a lot longer than I do, but I get bored. Any ideas!

From my own point of view im just to stubborn to stop :o .

If i set out with the goal of running 5 miles then thats what I will do.

but i find i can do 3 miles without my music on but when you get to 5m distance i find music helps.

but all in all i love running on the streets so that gets me though the hard odd mile.

I may tred on a few toes but i could not get on a tredmill for all the tea in china. all that effort and you end up looking at just the same peice of wall / mirror.

I think the gory details may put me off ;) Its okay I wont be able to do it this year sadly :(

I'm sorry to say I'm with Paula R on this - I count :D, I also listen to music and sing along (on slow runs), think about work - I write copy for part of my job so I'll do rough drafts on longer runs and just generally about how I'm going to feel crossing the line in April (this works very well when I want to quit)...and a million other things that all help me zone out from the running completely - there's a thread on runners world forums about this too...let me go and dig it out...

    EDIT: Ah here we go:
    http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/forummessages/mps/dt/4/UTN/134329/

Actually there are a few threads on it - I wonder if treadmillers get more bored than outdoor runners??

Thanks very much for the link :D Yeah, I workout at the gym, so I think that plays a big part in my boredom. I've been using a podcast called Podrunner, which is just loads of ambient music with big base beats that seems to help me keep going. Sometimes I actually forget that I'm running (shhh) ;)

Well done Rich & Becky on your 10mile race this morning! :T You sound like you had a whale of a time Becky. I hope it has given you confidence for future races. Great times too for both of you!

It looks like starting a new, refreshed thread was a great idea. So many new posters in the last day or two. I hope everyone is inspired to start running, once you are into it there's nothing better!

I'm feeling surprisingly un-stiff considering my longest run in a very long time yesterday. So much so that we have just been up to Coniston for a walk up there. (Well I had to get OH out into the fresh air somehow. )

Hi Bex, It is much easier outside than on a treadmill, but I either listen to music on my ipod, or if I don't have my music on, I find my mind just drifts and I mull over things that have happened during the day, or else I plan things for later that day. I always seem to come back with things much straighter in my head anyway. It also helps if you can run with someone of a similar pace to yourself, then you can chat about stuff.

Am looking forward to my intervals tomorrow. (Yes I really am!) :o

I understand what you say about treadmills. I think I could get into street running with a little more experience. I've never been too good at running, so I suppose I've always been a bit negative of my ability. I feel I will get there this time though!

    Thanks,
started 3 days a week on the treadmill, once i get a few weeks in intend to start hitting the road, 5k is on march 29, whereas 10k is not until september, no particular target time for the 5k, just thought it would be good to get around without walking!
For the 10k I would love to get under the hour mark, but as long as its under 1:07:00 I will be happy as I will have beaten my PB from the last 10k I did (with virtually no training if im honest)

1:07 is no lazy time for 10K :D

Chick was aiming for a sub 60 10K and was literally seconds off a few weeks ago so she might be a good one to advise re: September and training - I seem to remember lots of 800m intervals were required :D

So you 5k is in 10 weeks - thats plenty of time to get some good training in - 3 days a week you wont be walking any of it just remember to keep at the 4 miler until its your basic block - since 5k is less than this you'll definitely get around running - if you want a specific plan Rich is probably your best bet - opppss nominating him again (he loves it really :o:o:o).

    Happy running!

Dont worry - we all feel like this - I always think to myself 'eeeek those runners are going to think I'm not a proper runner and laugh at me' - now I just have to shake myself and say 'you're on a 10 mile run stupid of course you're a runner'. Its silly, but its human nature to compare, but your running is your own - everyone you see running could have only been out for five minutes or been out five hours - so you just have to learn to look inwards at your own effort and achievement.

Just keep plugging away - you will get there - I definitely find having a goal in mind helps with this as well though :D:D:D

Sorry more rambling from e today - jeeez :D

Yeah dont worry to much about it Bexterragga. Once your used to the street you will looking for any reason to add a bit of swagger to your running style.

Hey simply - my advice is merely that - advice - everyone works differently so do whats right for you :D - I'm a relative newbie to running anyway (I just sponge info from Rich and repeat and look like I know what I'm talking about ;))

But that is some good running :D - you should be fine to run longer distances if you pulling out that sort of stuff already! :D

Thanks Becky, I don't think my fitness levels are too bad as I do a lot of walking throughout the week. I try to get out for half an hour, at lunchtime, least three times a week.

I have been running on and off since September but more recently have been laid up with a heavy cold; I am hoping that by posting on here I will be motivated to keep going and I welcome any advice that will help me run longer distances.

HAHAHA :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:- well in my case its the cyclists - but I actually get attempts at them chatting me up at lights and stuff - hilarious when all I can think of - urrrrgh I have a sweaty back:eek::eek:

Note to men - do not try to chat up women runners - all we can think of is how gross and sweaty we are and we will not be able to talk to you for fear of being smelly :o:o:o

chick is wayyy better than 60 mins.....she is almost at 50 mins for 10k! It was me that was just outside the hour mark - 60 mins and 27 seconds I think......grrrr!!

As for motivation - thank goodness for the ipod I say - but also, I try not to think of anything - my running time is my time NOT to be thinking about the stresses of life - it is my time to clear my head, so the longer I run, the more clear my head will be!
