Hi everyone :j
Just caught up with all the posts. Don't you people do any work
Anyway, I'm so inspired read about the new joiners, those that ran/will be running. Almost makes me want to get out there this evening, or I would if my legs weren't still sore from yesterday and I have housework to catchup with
Did the Dorking 10 (miles) yesterday. Lovely route even though I wouldn't recognise most of it if you took me back there. Lord it was so hot but there were some VERY good times posted despite the heat. I calculated my time to be 1hr 32, but I need to double check that. It was inspiring to see slightly older folk (aged 60-70) finishing in 70 minutes and under  so I can still improve (miracle, anyone? :rotfl:).
Despite my intention to sign up for the Eden Project marathon, funds won't permit til the end of the month (only got paid last Friday too), but in the meantime I'm going to print off the RW 4:30 training plan and get stuck in. I'll have to check out the hills of Crystal Palace/Dulwich and Norbury as part of my prep as I've been told Covington Way, Streatham is 'flat' in comparison to Cornwall hills :eek:. I might have to get an oxygen tank but I'll give it a go anyway
Safe running all. Club speedwork tomorrow so I think I can justifiably relax my legs this evening as I am cycling home tonight. The 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -

Some interesting information on the RFL. I never realised it was women only. I'm sure my brother did it last year? Or maybe it was another race?

Hades marathon (oh erm ok Edinburgh marathon)
Start at the beginning i say which for me was Satuday morning.
Naturally despite intending to pack Friday before work i never packed until Saturday morning. Nothing new here thenGot to Carlisle and parked outside Grans before nipping in to use the loo. Pretty much left straightaway as i was naturally a little pushed for time.
Down to the station via the cash point and for a change my seat wsa actually empty. Nice quick and easy trip to Edinburgh and as i was staying in the same hotel as last year no problems finding it. Was rather hot walking from Waverley over to Haymarket where i was staying.
Got to my room and settled down with the English FA Cup on the radio (if we have freeview why cant we have a BBC ENGLAND channel too bloody scottish cup final :P admittedly Novo's goal was awesome) whilst eating one bacon and cheese pasty and a lamb and mint pasty. Also had two bottles of choclolate frijj milkshake too.
Fell asleep during the footie and woke up at 5:15 so a quick shower before heading off to find the restaurant for dinner. Crossing town I discovered the cycling event was blocking the easy route. It was in fact a big loop with the restaurant on the inside so there was also the hassle of finding a crossing point to get to where I wanted to be. Not a major problem in the end.
Had been feeling a bit sick in terms of full stomach on the walk down to the restaurant but assumed that was down to the two pasties and milkshake I’d had a few hours earlier. On hindsight it might have been early effects of the heat. Had cannelloni for dinner and when some of us were after desserts but were told no as we had to leave cos the table was needed for more customers. Wasn’t a major problem as the restaurant also sells ice creams out of a window on the street. So there was several of us eating ice cream watching the cyclists do their laps.
Popped into the Elephant house for a bottle of Becks after the ice cream and saw the folding bike race folks go past. Was a rather amusing sight and I’d of not been surprised if Boris Johnson had gone past in suit and tie on a bike. Anyway soon ambled off back to the hotel and discovered I’d failed to spot a strip joint on the way down.
Settled down for a earlish night having gotten home in time for the Britains Got Talent results. Was rather hot and also noisy (windows were open in an effort to cool the room but it was on a busy road) so it was gone 11 before I got to sleep.
Woke up at 6 then headed down for brekkie shortly afterwards. Had toast with scrambled eggs and beans on plus a bowl of porridge as well as 2 glasses of OJ. Back to the room to change etc before heading down to the start.
Walking down to the start area I could tell it was gonna be a hot day as it was already hotter than the hottest point of the Cyprus marathon. Dropped bag off and met several fetchies at the start before moving into my correct pen with about 20 mins to go. Bumped into Anna Finn whilst in their too which was nice.
Set off after the usual wait whilst the faster people go first and crossed the start line 9 mins after the official start. I managed to make a whopping quarter of a mile before spotting a lengthy row of men peeing through some railings off to the right in a wooded area so went to join them. Was probably my longest during race pitstop ever too but then I had needed to go whilst in the pen but the toilet queues were large.
Rejoined the race and was soon back up to cruising pace. Had decided I’d aim at 9 min miling and see how things felt in the heat. Was going along ok and not regaining the lost time from the pitstop too quickly. I was feeling a little warm though.
Got a bottle of water from the first drink station and the part I got mine from was looking a bit low already. Screw top bottle so I half drank half snorted the contents of the bottle which was mildly amusing at the time. Well apart from when I was trying to snot the excess water out of my nose.
Second drinks station had lucazade which has a proper top so I could at least run and drink properly this time. Was going along at 9 min miling all the way through to mile 7 quiet happily but I could tell it wouldn’t last as I was getting hot. Despite reaching the coast there was no real breeze to help cool me so I eased it off a bit. Was still going along at PB pace though.
Third drinks station was a water only one so this time because it was hot and wanting to get the water onboard I walked to drink it. Mind you a 250ml bottle isn’t exactly gonna last that long in this heat.
Got to the 4th drinks station and got a 500ml lucazade bottle which being it was hot I walked a little with to cool of a tad as well as turning the Ipod on. Was soon off running again and swiftly reached Fetchpoint and grabbed some jelly babies on the way past. Past the halfway mark in 2:05 roughly which was quick enough in the heat.
Something decent came onto the Ipod as I approached the halfway chip timing mat and erm I might of moved onto the traffic side of the cones and sped up and zipped past people for half a mile or so at this point. A bit daft really in turns out. Did another 2 miles or so before reaching the up and down loop towards Longniddry and walked the up bit to cool off a bit and also partly as I was feeling a tad queasy in the stomach.
Apart from the few miles where I had walked to drink or cool off a bit I’d been cruising along around 9:20ish pace on average which was PB pace. Was spotted by IanS before heading up into the Gosforth loop, not that I noticed or at least remember, and he said at the after race party I was looking a bit !!!!. Well yes that turned out to be true as once I reached the wooded bit of the loop I had to vanish into the bushes to be sick.
Walk/run for a while and on reaching the water station at about mile 19 I found there to be none left, nor was there any at the one on the other side a bit further down. Not what I needed really. Reverted to a slow paced run for a good mile or so before breaking into a walk again. Had also been telling all fetchies going the other way still that there was no water ahead.
Handily there was a guy with a hose pipe spraying us down on the outward leg so on the return I grabbed a discarded bottle to fill up with some water. Got some more water when I got to the last relay changeover point too which was beginning to make me feel better.
Was coping with run walking at this stage and on reaching fetchpoint stopped for some peanuts and a bit of water. Thanks Kwaka. Was soon off run walking again, although at first it was more walking than running. Did decide that once I hit the 25 mile marker I would be running most if not all the way to the finish unless I was gonna barf again.
Thankfully that wasn’t happening and the running from the 25 mile marker wasn’t too much of a struggle. The 26 mile marker came into sight and I began speeding up a bit. Passed it and just continued to gradually increase the pace all the way down the finishing stretch although it was tricky as its rather narrow and most people weren’t going as fast as me. Might of even had a bash out sprinting relay runners too
Crossed the line and then got stuck on the long queue for the goody bag. Not the greatest off organisation here I must say. Met up with fetchies at the finish and got my bag from the truck so I could get my FGS into me. Soon decided it would be prudent to head oer to the school to change before heading back to town back to the hotel.
The buses back to town were as !!!! as last year although the queue was half the size as it was only queued back to the junction this time rather than round the back of the school too. Got back to the city centre and was need of a pee so I thought I’d slip into McDonald’s in Princes mall but I’d forgotten its one for the mall not McDonalds and I needed cash. Oh well as I had the wallet out I went to McDonalds afterwards for some food. Asked for 2 double cheeseburgers and paid with a note not bothering to count change so was mildly surprised to get 3. Obviously thought I had wanted 3
Walked along Princes Gardens and stopped in one of the covered seating areas to eat my burgers and text people. Headed back to my hotel afterwards and flopped onto the bed not moving for a while. Had some crap on the telly but I forget what it was now, Eastenders springs to mind followed by top gear. Had a shower and then headed off for the after race party.
Erm yes well the walk down was fun as my right knee was refusing to work properly and is still a bit of a bother now but I’m sure it’ll be fine in a few days. The party was good though although I left a little after 11 as I was feeling tired and knew it would hurt waling back.
Was up reasonably late having remembered to stick the do not disturb sign on the door before going to bed. Simple trip back although the cat missed me as she’s still running around like a loon now.
I don’t really want to go into the lack of water etc as its been covered by other people. I did like the fact that the start area was better organised with the toilets not on the road meaning it was far less congested this year. The change at the finish was probably better in that this year I didn’t have to loop round thought the entry area going through loads of people to get to my bags.

Finished in 4986th spot which was good. 3 mins faster than last year despite the heat, lack of water and being sick. Pity about the later as I would probably of been sub 4:30 bar that. Still my 4th fastest marathon of the 13 I have done too. No chance of a sub 4 on my next intended one as it’s a hilly one in Cumbria but there is always the Newcastle one in November and I would bet I don’t bake at that oneDebt free Nerd number 1122 LBM Jan 2009 Debt @ LBM £40,086.88 (14/01/09)
